Students in Poland with a PESEL number can get a mobile student ID, called mLegitymacja, through their university and add it to the official mObywatel app. From academic year 2025/26, it is the standalone default student credential for eligible students—not an add-on that requires a plastic card. Ask your university to issue it, then scan its QR code and enter its one-time activation code in mObywatel while online.
Who can get a digital student ID in Poland?
Since the statutory change took effect on 1 July 2025, universities issue mLegitymacja to students with a PESEL number, including new and continuing students, from academic year 2025/26. Eligible programmes are first-cycle (bachelor’s), second-cycle (master’s) and long-cycle master’s studies. Doctoral and postgraduate students are not issued this student ID under the service rules. The Ministry of Digital Affairs describes mLegitymacja and the physical student card as equivalent and independent credentials, so you do not need to hold a plastic card to use the mobile one. The official service is for people with a PESEL number whose university has issued the credential. If you do not have a PESEL, ask your university about an electronic student card (ELS); students who do have a PESEL may also request ELS. A Ministry announcement in November 2025 said nearly 1.3 million students in Poland would gain access to the new default mobile credential; that is an approximate reach statement, not a count of app users. How to add mLegitymacja in mObywatel
- Ask your university to issue the credential. The university must participate in the government service. If you cannot add the ID in the app, first check that it has been issued and that the university has provided activation materials. Service information for institutions
- Get the QR code and one-time activation code from the university. Both are valid for 30 days from generation under the service terms. Do not share either with another person. mLegitymacja service terms
- Connect to the internet and add the document in mObywatel. Sign in to the app, scan the university’s QR code, enter the one-time code and download your student data. Activation requires an internet connection. mLegitymacja service terms
- Keep in mind that the credential is tied to one device. The student certificate is associated with you and the device where it is activated, and its validity follows the issued student credential. If you replace or lose your phone, contact your university for its supported reactivation or recovery procedure; the terms do not set out a universal self-service transfer flow. mLegitymacja service terms

How to show the ID and verify it
Open mLegitymacja in mObywatel and present the document on your phone when asked. The service terms say that lawful presentation of mLegitymacja has an effect analogous to presenting a student ID. The Ministry says the mobile credential confirms student status and associated discount entitlements, but whether a particular discount or ticket is accepted still depends on the provider’s terms. mLegitymacja service terms · Ministry of Digital Affairs
For a live visual check, use the app’s current document view rather than a screenshot. The service terms describe dynamic elements including the photo, ID number and age, validity status, animated hologram and Polish flag, and time of presentation. App access is protected by the application password. For QR-based cryptographic verification, use the confirmation feature in the app and scan the verifier’s QR code; that process requires internet. mLegitymacja service terms

What works offline?
Once mLegitymacja has been added, you can display it without an internet connection, and its barcode for campus services such as libraries works offline. You need internet to add or update the credential and to perform QR-based cryptographic verification. Ministry of Digital Affairs

If you cannot activate or use the credential
- The ID is not available in the app: Confirm with your university that it has issued mLegitymacja and supplied activation materials; university participation and issuance are prerequisites.
- The QR code or activation code has expired: Ask the university to issue fresh materials. The 30-day validity runs from generation, and the service terms do not specify a student-side reset process. mLegitymacja service terms
- You are trying to add it on a second phone: Activation is limited to one device. Contact your university for the supported device-replacement or reactivation process rather than attempting another activation. mLegitymacja service terms

- You are offline: An already-added credential can be displayed and its campus barcode used, but adding or updating it and QR-based cryptographic verification require internet. Ministry of Digital Affairs
