Does diesel go bad, and what can contaminate it?
Stored diesel can become unsuitable for use when contaminated or when storage conditions compromise its quality. Cummins lists water, microorganisms, wax, hard particles, debris, and sediment among common diesel contaminants. A fuel’s age alone does not establish whether it remains fit for a particular engine.
Water at the bottom of a tank is a key maintenance concern. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says regular checks and removal of water are widely recognized preventive steps for reducing corrosion risk in underground storage tank (UST) systems. A qualified servicing company can check for and remove water, examine the system, and may perform functionality testing; EPA also describes regular water and fuel testing as an option.

What EPA’s corrosion study does—and does not—show
In an EPA study published in 2016, 83 percent of the 42 diesel USTs examined showed moderate or severe corrosion of internal metal components. EPA says the sample does not support projecting a nationwide prevalence rate. The finding concerns the underground tanks studied; it should not be applied to household cans or aboveground tanks. How can I tell if diesel has water in it?
A check or test is more reliable than guessing from the fuel’s age. For a bulk or underground tank, EPA advises checking for water and removing it; a servicing company can carry out that work and may also examine the system or arrange water and fuel testing. EPA references microbial-contamination guidance and industry tank-maintenance documents, but its cited page does not reproduce the relevant standard in full.

Water-detection paste or a tank-sampling tool may support a water check, but EPA does not endorse a particular product. Follow the tank and product instructions. For fuel that may be contaminated, seek qualified service or testing before putting it into equipment.

Use appropriate, compatible storage; protect fuel from heat, water, and contamination; and follow the fuel supplier’s and equipment maker’s instructions. For bulk or underground tanks, build regular inspection and water checks into maintenance rather than treating fuel age as the only indicator of quality. The right container, quantity limits, and precautions depend on the site and applicable rules.

OSHA’s general-industry flammable-liquids standard includes requirements concerning approved containers, cabinets, and indoor storage rooms. Its construction standard requires approved containers for covered handling and bars storage in exits, stairways, or normally used safe passageways. Which provision applies depends on the liquid’s classification, quantity, container, and work context. See OSHA 29 CFR 1910.106 and OSHA 29 CFR 1926.152.

In a 2000 interpretation tied to a specific construction-site rule, OSHA treated common grades of diesel with flash points below 140°F as flammable liquid under that rule and discussed a 25-to-75-foot range for fire-extinguisher placement from outdoor flammable-liquid storage. This is a dated, rule-specific interpretation—not a universal household instruction. Read OSHA’s interpretation.
Farms and agricultural storage
EPA’s farm Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) FAQ describes conditional thresholds: more than 1,320 gallons aboveground across containers of at least 55 gallons, or more than 42,000 gallons completely buried. Applicability conditions and exceptions matter, so these are not blanket allowances or requirements for every farm. Check the EPA farm SPCC FAQ.
A separate rule example applies in England: UK government guidance covers agricultural fuel-oil storage over 1,500 litres. It is England-specific, not a UK-wide or international household limit. Read the England agricultural storage guidance.
Bulk and underground tanks
For bulk or underground storage, focus on tank condition, water removal, inspection, and appropriate testing. EPA’s diesel UST materials describe corrosion risks and recommend checking for and removing water; qualified servicing can help assess the system and its fuel.
