To tell whether a sound is diegetic, ask: Does the film present it as part of the story world—something a character could hear? If so, it is diegetic. If it is presented from outside that world for the audience, it is non-diegetic. The source does not have to appear on screen.
What diegetic and non-diegetic mean
Diegetic sound belongs to the world of the story. Characters can hear it, or the scene establishes that they could: dialogue, footsteps, traffic, wind, room ambience, or music playing from a radio are common examples. The source may be visible, off screen, or only implied. The Columbia Film Language Glossary and Oklahoma State University’s introduction to film and television define the distinction in relation to the story world.
Non-diegetic sound is presented as coming from outside that world, typically for the audience. A background score that characters do not hear and an external narrator are standard examples. See the Columbia glossary entry on non-diegetic sound.
How to classify a sound in a scene
- Ask whether the scene places the sound in its world. Is there an actual or implied source in the location, such as a speaker, passing vehicle, or nearby dog?
- Consider the characters’ access to it. Could a character in that scene hear the sound? If yes, it is generally diegetic. If the sound is only an audience-facing accompaniment, it is generally non-diegetic.
- Do not use visibility as the test. A barking dog or approaching car can be off screen and still be diegetic if the scene implies its presence.
- Track changes in presentation. A sound can shift category as the film reveals or changes its source. Classify what the film is doing at that moment.
Examples: the same kind of sound can work either way
| Sound in the scene | Likely category | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A character speaks | Diegetic | The voice belongs to the scene and can be heard by other characters. |
| A radio plays in a car | Diegetic | The music has a source within the story world. |
| An unseen dog barks nearby | Diegetic | The source need not be visible if the scene implies it is present. |
| A score swells as a character walks | Usually non-diegetic | It is ordinarily presented for the audience, not as sound the character hears. |
| A narrator comments on events | Usually non-diegetic | The voice typically sits outside the scene, though a film may establish an in-world narrator. |
Music is especially useful to classify by presentation rather than by type. A song from a visible or implied radio is diegetic; a score added as audience-facing accompaniment is ordinarily non-diegetic. A song may begin as score and become diegetic when the film reveals its source, or music heard within a scene may continue across a transition. The category can change with the film’s framing. The New Zealand Qualifications Authority’s Media Studies glossary and FilmSound’s terminology reference offer further examples.

What the distinction tells you about a film
Diegetic sound can help establish a location and make its acoustic space feel coherent: traffic suggests a street, for example, while room ambience helps define an interior. Non-diegetic sound can guide attention, add meaning, or shape a scene’s impact without being heard by its characters. These are possible functions, not automatic effects; what a particular sound does depends on the scene. Oklahoma State discusses sound perspective and the construction of a convincing diegetic world, while the NZQA glossary describes non-diegetic sound as a way to create meaning or impact.
The terms are about a sound’s place in the narrative, not how it was made or recorded. A sound captured during filming can be presented as audience-only accompaniment; a sound created later can be placed within the story world. For discussion or analysis, describe the sound’s source, who can hear it, and how the scene frames it rather than assuming production method determines category. For a broader account of sound in film, see “3 Key Concepts and Definitions” from The Auditory Setting: Environmental Sounds in Film and Media Arts.
