Yes—xAI announced a $6 billion Series B on May 26, 2024, after an April report said the company was seeking that amount. It later announced a separate $6 billion Series C in December 2024. The April figure described a prospective deal; the two completed-round announcements came afterward.
What happened to the reported $6 billion raise?
In April 2024, TechCrunch reported that xAI was seeking $6 billion at an $18 billion pre-money valuation, with Sequoia Capital and Future Ventures reported as participants. That was a report about fundraising negotiations, not xAI’s official announcement of a completed round. TechCrunch’s April 2024 report
On May 26, 2024, xAI announced that it had raised $6 billion in a Series B. The announcement named Valor Equity Partners, Vy Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Fidelity Management & Research Company, Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal and Kingdom Holding, among others. xAI’s Series B announcement

Was there another $6 billion round?
Yes. On December 23, 2024, xAI announced a separate $6 billion Series C. Its named financial investors included A16Z, BlackRock, Fidelity, Kingdom Holdings, Lightspeed, MGX, Morgan Stanley, OIA, Qatar Investment Authority, Sequoia, Valor and Vy Capital. xAI also said NVIDIA and AMD participated as strategic investors. xAI’s Series C announcement
| Round | Announcement date and amount | Valuation information | Investors named |
|---|---|---|---|
| Series B | xAI announced $6 billion on May 26, 2024. | TechCrunch’s April report described the prospective round at an $18 billion pre-money valuation; xAI’s Series B announcement did not state a valuation. | Valor Equity Partners, Vy Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Fidelity Management & Research Company, Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal and Kingdom Holding, among others. |
| Series C | xAI announced $6 billion on December 23, 2024. | Bloomberg later reported a valuation above $40 billion in the context of this round; that is not the same valuation basis as the earlier proposed Series B figure. | A16Z, BlackRock, Fidelity, Kingdom Holdings, Lightspeed, MGX, Morgan Stanley, OIA, Qatar Investment Authority, Sequoia, Valor and Vy Capital; NVIDIA and AMD as strategic investors. |
The two $6 billion figures refer to separate rounds. Do not treat the reported $18 billion pre-money valuation for the proposed Series B as directly comparable to the above-$40 billion valuation Bloomberg reported later for the Series C. Bloomberg’s December 2024 report

Was the funding a loan, and how much did each investor contribute?
xAI described the financings as Series B and Series C rounds, not loans. The company announcements identify participating investors but do not provide a complete term sheet or each investor’s check size. There is therefore no basis in these announcements for saying that all named participants contributed equal amounts or for detailing private financing terms.

xAI said the Series B proceeds would take its first products to market, build advanced infrastructure and accelerate research and development. In the company’s words: “The funds from the round will be used to take xAI’s first products to market, build advanced infrastructure, and accelerate the research and development of future technologies.” xAI’s Series B announcement
