Thomas Tuchel’s treatment of Trent Alexander-Arnold supports an argument that England’s 2026 World Cup campaign became too cautious: Tuchel questioned Trent’s defensive discipline, left him out of the squad, and later switched England to a back five while protecting a lead against Argentina. But the evidence does not prove that fear was Tuchel’s private motive, or that selecting Trent would have prevented England’s semi-final defeat.
Why was Trent Alexander-Arnold left out of England’s World Cup squad?
Tuchel’s public criticism of Trent was specific: he valued the Liverpool defender’s attacking contribution but questioned the defensive work that came with it. In August 2025, after leaving him out of a qualifying squad, Tuchel said he was a fan of Trent and Jack Grealish, but had selected Reece James and Tino Livramento for that right-back camp. He framed it as competition for places.
Tuchel told BBC Sport that Trent sometimes “relies heavily on his offensive contributions” and gives less emphasis to “defensive discipline and effort.” He also warned that one lapse could be decisive in qualifying or tournament football. That is evidence of a real selection priority: reducing the risk of defensive mistakes, even when that means losing some attacking range.

England Football said Tuchel’s broader selection approach emphasized chemistry, trust, leadership and cohesion. Tuchel summed up that approach by saying, “The best group is not necessarily the 26 most talented players.” That was a general explanation of how he built the squad, not a published, player-by-player account of why each omitted player missed out.

BBC Sport’s report on Tuchel’s comments about Trent and England Football’s account of the squad announcement establish the comments and selections. Neither says Tuchel excluded Trent because he was afraid.
Was Tuchel’s approach fear, or a defensible risk calculation?
The case for calling it fear rests on a pattern, not on a confession. Tuchel repeatedly emphasized the danger of a defensive lapse and chose cohesion and reliability over assembling the squad’s most technically gifted players. In a knockout tournament, protecting against a costly mistake is a legitimate concern. Yet if avoiding risk dominates selection and tactics, a team can also surrender the ball, initiative and the ability to create chances.
| Selection priority | Potential benefit | Potential cost |
|---|---|---|
| Defensive security | Less exposure to errors that could decide a close match. | Reduced access to Trent’s passing range and ability to progress play. |
| Cohesion and role fit | A settled group built around trust and complementary responsibilities. | Individual technical quality or tactical flexibility may be left out. |
That trade-off explains why Trent’s omission became a symbol in the debate about England’s style. His distinctive passing could have offered another route through pressure, but a plausible tactical benefit is not proof that he would have improved this particular team or changed a particular result.

Why did England switch to a back five against Argentina?
England lost 2–1 to Argentina in the semi-final after taking a second-half lead. Tuchel changed to a back five as Argentina pressed for a response. He defended the switch as a way to address Argentina’s threat; Sky Sports’ match account describes England becoming more defensive in personnel as the pressure increased.
The decision can be read as protection of a lead, but it also raises the central tactical question: did England’s shape help them withstand pressure, or make it harder to retain possession and keep threatening? Tuchel said afterward that ball possession was crucial, while adding that controlling a game with the ball was perhaps not part of English football’s “DNA” in the way it was for Spain or Argentina and Brazil. Gary Neville, as reported by Sky Sports, objected that Tuchel had left several technically skilled players, including Trent, at home.
Those remarks and the defeat made the passivity criticism sharper. The Guardian’s later retrospective argued that England had relied on stout defending and moments of inspiration through much of the tournament, and pointed to unresolved tactical flaws and debate about forward-passing options. That is analysis of the campaign, not an official finding that the back five or Trent’s omission caused the semi-final loss.

What the evidence says—and what it cannot establish
- Established: Tuchel publicly questioned Trent’s defensive discipline and effort while acknowledging his attacking contribution and saying he was a fan.
- Established: Trent was omitted from the 2026 World Cup squad, and Tuchel described his overall selection approach in terms of group quality, trust and cohesion.
- Established: England lost 2–1 to Argentina after leading, and Tuchel defended his back-five change as a response to the match situation.
- Interpretation: The sequence can support the view that England’s risk aversion narrowed their technical and attacking options.
- Not established: Tuchel said he excluded Trent out of fear, or Trent’s presence would have changed the score or outcome.
Tuchel described the Argentina match as England’s first defeat in 15 official matches under him—14 previous matches without defeat, excluding friendlies—according to England Football. England then played France for the bronze medal. Those details put the semi-final in context, but they do not resolve the counterfactual of what might have happened with a different squad or formation.
The strongest defensible conclusion is therefore narrower than the title’s causal claim: Tuchel’s decisions reveal a strong preference for defensive security and group cohesion, and England’s response to Argentina gave critics grounds to argue that this preference tipped into excessive caution. The available evidence supports that criticism as an interpretation, not as proof that fear caused the defeat.
Sky Sports’ semi-final account, England Football’s report on Tuchel’s reaction, and The Guardian’s retrospective on England’s tactical questions document the match and subsequent debate.
