Her did not create OpenAI, but Sam Altman has said the film influenced how the company thought about people interacting with AI. Did Her inspire Sam Altman?
Yes, in a specific sense: Altman said the film influenced OpenAI’s thinking about AI interaction. In a Vanity Fair account, he called the movie’s conversational interface idea “incredibly prophetic” and said it “certainly more than a little bit inspired us.” His claim concerns the interaction model—people speaking with AI through conversation—not sole authorship of modern AI or the creation of OpenAI.

Why did the comparison resurface with GPT-4o?
In 2024, around OpenAI’s GPT-4o announcement, Altman posted the single word “her.” The launch’s new voice capability renewed comparisons to Samantha, whose relationship with Theodore is built around conversation. The parallel is about a voice-centered way of interacting; it does not mean GPT-4o is Samantha or shares the film character’s romantic role.

How is ChatGPT different from Samantha?
Her presents Samantha as a romantic partner whose independent development reshapes—and ultimately ends—her relationship with Theodore. Altman’s documented comparison is narrower: the film anticipated conversational interaction with AI. That influence does not establish that ChatGPT is designed as a romantic companion, or that its development follows Samantha’s fictional trajectory.
