The designer behind Sky: Children of the Light and Journey is Jenova Chen, co-founder and CEO of thatgamecompany. But the available official funding announcement does not verify a $35 million raise: TPG reported that it and Sequoia invested $160 million in the studio on March 3, 2022. The $35 million figure remains unconfirmed.
Who is the designer behind Sky and Journey?
Jenova Chen co-founded thatgamecompany and serves as its CEO. The studio identifies flOw, Flower, Journey and Sky: Children of the Light among its games. Its May 2026 anniversary announcement dates Journey to 2012 and Sky to 2019. Thatgamecompany’s 20-year anniversary announcement also says the company was founded in 2006.
What funding amount is confirmed?
TPG’s official announcement says thatgamecompany received a $160 million investment from TPG and Sequoia on March 3, 2022. It does not substantiate a separate $35 million raise. The available sources do not establish whether the headline’s amount refers to another transaction, a different date, or an error. TPG’s announcement is the primary source for the $160 million figure and the named investors.

What is thatgamecompany doing now?
On August 25, 2026, thatgamecompany announced thatgamepublisher, a publishing label intended to support developers making emotionally ambitious games. The company says planned services include funding, production planning, platform and launch strategy, marketing, community support and long-term intellectual-property development. Its announcement does not establish current submission procedures, eligibility rules or deal terms.
Chen, identified in the announcement as CEO and creative director, said: “When we first began making games, many people questioned whether interactive experiences could move players as deeply as film, literature or music.” Read the company’s announcement of thatgamepublisher for its stated plans.

Thatgamecompany reported in May 2026 that Sky: Children of the Light had surpassed 300 million downloads. This is the company’s figure; its anniversary announcement does not describe a separate measurement methodology. The figure is a download count, not a stated count of active players.
