In late April 2024, Tesla reportedly eliminated a roughly 500-person Supercharger group, including charging executive Rebecca Tinucci and substantially all of her team. That supports saying the team was largely laid off—not that every person in every Tesla role connected to Superchargers was dismissed. Tesla said it would keep expanding the network, but at a slower pace for new locations and with more focus on existing sites and uptime.
What happened to Tesla’s Supercharger team?
Reports published April 30 and May 1, 2024 described a major reduction in Tesla’s charging organization. The Associated Press reported that team leaders said the roughly 500-person group had been eliminated; it also reported that former Tesla North America charging real-estate acquisition leader Lane Chaplin wrote, “Unfortunately the charging organization at Tesla is no more.” Axios reported that Tinucci and substantially all of her roughly 500-person team were laid off. Elon Musk appeared to confirm the move, according to AP.
Those accounts do not independently establish that literally every employee in every Tesla role related to Superchargers was dismissed. The phrase “every single employee” is therefore stronger than the sourced reporting supports. The Associated Press report and Axios’s report describe the scale and scope as understood at the time.

Why did Tesla cut the team?
The cited reports establish the layoffs and Tesla’s stated priorities afterward, but do not provide a definitive, detailed explanation for the decision. Musk’s contemporaneous statement on X, reported by Reuters, said Tesla would add to the network “just at a slower pace for new locations and more focus on 100% uptime and expansion of existing locations.” That points to a shift in emphasis, but it should not be treated as a complete explanation of the layoffs or as proof of how the network was subsequently run. Reuters reported Musk’s statement and reactions.

Would Tesla stop building Superchargers?
No such stop was announced in the cited coverage. Musk’s 2024 statement described slower construction of new locations and more attention to uptime and expanding existing locations. Those are different priorities: fewer or slower new-site additions do not mean that all network growth would cease.
The scale of the network helps explain why the announcement drew attention. AP quoted U.S. Department of Energy figures reporting 2,261 U.S. fast-charging stations and 25,491 plugs at the time. Those are contemporaneous 2024 figures, not a current network count. AP also quoted an analyst who warned that the staffing change could put reliability at risk; that was a concern, not a measurement of later service performance.

What did the layoffs mean for other automakers’ EVs?
The announcement came as automakers were preparing to give their drivers access to Tesla’s charging network, so uncertainty about integration and ongoing operations was an immediate concern. But the companies’ public reactions differed:

| Ford | Spokesperson Marty Günsberg told Axios, “Ford’s plans for our customers do not change.” This was Ford’s response in April 2024, not a guarantee about later developments. |
| General Motors | GM said it was monitoring potential impacts, according to AP and Axios. |
The reports document those reactions; they do not establish that access plans were ultimately completed or unchanged after 2024. The layoff announcement alone also does not show whether integration, availability, or charging reliability later improved or worsened.

What can be concluded now?
The reported action was a substantial reduction in Tesla’s charging organization in April 2024, described by AP as the elimination of a roughly 500-person group and by Axios as layoffs affecting Tinucci and substantially all of her team. Tesla’s stated plan at the time was slower new-site growth with greater focus on existing locations and uptime. The cited reporting does not establish Tesla’s current staffing or strategy, nor does it measure long-term effects on network expansion, uptime, or access for other automakers’ vehicles.
