Some sauropods may have had a strong, beak-like tissue around their teeth, but fossils have not established that sauropods generally had bird-like beaks. A 2024 study points to tooth and soft-tissue evidence in Europasaurus and Camarasaurus; a 2026 review offers a different explanation involving labial scales and extensive gingiva. The proposed coverings could have coexisted with teeth.

What does “beak-like” mean for a sauropod?

In this debate, “beak-like” refers to a possible tough tissue associated with the mouth or teeth—not necessarily a toothless, bird-style sheath covering the front of the jaws. Researchers have proposed different arrangements for different dinosaurs, and the evidence does not support giving every sauropod the same mouth.

A rhamphotheca is the keratinous covering familiar from birds. The 2024 study of Europasaurus proposes a structure akin to one, but also allows that another kind of cornified connective tissue could account for the evidence. Keratin itself was not preserved as a complete beak in the fossils discussed.

What evidence prompted the Europasaurus hypothesis?

Teeth that stayed in place despite root resorption

The study describes articulated and isolated tooth rows in which teeth remained in anatomical position even when their roots had been strongly resorbed. Some teeth were no longer anchored in jaw bone. The authors suggest that strong connective tissue around the teeth could have helped retain them.

Worn enamel wrinkling

The authors also report enamel wrinkling that is worn smooth in part of the tooth crowns. They suggest the texture may have helped anchor teeth in a covering. That pattern is an indirect clue: it does not preserve the covering itself or establish its composition.

The study’s conclusion is explicitly a hypothesis: “We hypothesize that eusauropods in general may have possessed a structure akin to a rhamphotheca, which may be an autapomorphy of the group.” This is the authors’ proposed interpretation, not a settled finding about all sauropods.

What was preserved on a Camarasaurus jaw?

For Camarasaurus specimen SMA 0002, the study describes a thin, skin-like fossil patch over more than half of several tooth crowns on the left lower jaw. It covers tooth necks and much of the crowns. Along with exposed tooth necks and dental wear, the patch is interpreted as suggestive of connective tissue around the teeth.

The observed patch is not automatically equivalent to a bird’s beak. Its nature and extent remain matters of interpretation, and earlier work had already proposed a rhamphotheca-like structure for Camarasaurus. The 2024 authors call for further anatomical, microanatomical and histological study.

Could a covering and teeth have existed together?

Yes. The proposed tissue is tooth-associated, so it need not have replaced the teeth. The 2024 study suggests a covering might have helped hold teeth in place and formed part of a cropping apparatus. More broadly, a 2023 comparative analysis of dinosaur jaws uses the term “rostral keratin cover” and concludes that the evolution of beak-like rostral keratin did not lead to increasing rates of tooth loss. That broader result shows that keratinous structures and teeth can coexist in dinosaurs; it does not prove that any particular sauropod had a rhamphotheca.

Why do scientists disagree about the proposed covering?

A 2026 review revisits earlier proposals for rhamphothecae in basal sauropodomorphs and Camarasaurus, including arguments based on preserved soft tissue, rootless teeth retained in position and wear concentrated on the apical parts of crowns. The review instead favors labial scales with extensive gingiva as a more parsimonious interpretation of sauropodomorph skull anatomy.

These explanations differ over what tissue surrounded the teeth and how much of the jaw it covered. The available evidence has not resolved that disagreement, so “sauropods had beaks” is too broad a conclusion.

Why is Bonitasaura a different case?

Bonitasaura has been associated with a proposed keratinous cutting edge behind the dentary tooth row. That is a distinct, taxon-specific arrangement—not simply a bird-like sheath over the jaw tip, and not evidence that all sauropods shared one mouth structure.

What would clarify the question?

More fossils and closer anatomical, microanatomical and histological study could help distinguish a rhamphotheca-like covering from other connective tissues, labial scales and gingiva. For now, the strongest conclusion is limited: several lines of evidence have inspired a plausible hypothesis for particular sauropods, but the precise tissues and their distribution remain debated.
