A December 2024 media report said Samsung planned to make about 5 million Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 phones for 2025, down from a reported 8.2 million Fold6 and Flip6 run. But Samsung did not confirm those targets in the public statements reviewed here, and the report gave no sales totals to prove how poorly the 2024 models performed. The evidence points to cautious production planning—not a confirmed cut or an official declaration that either phone failed.
What did the report say about Samsung’s 2025 production?
On December 23, 2024, 9to5Google reported, citing Korean trade publication ETNews via an X account, that Samsung’s planned 2025 production run for the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 would total about 5 million phones. The reported split was 2 million Fold7 units and 3 million Flip7 units. The same account put the combined Fold6 and Flip6 run at 8.2 million.

Those figures describe reported production plans, not verified final output, shipments to retailers, or phones bought by customers. Samsung’s January and July 2025 public results releases did not confirm the unit targets. The figures should therefore be treated as an attributed media report rather than an established Samsung production decision. 9to5Google’s December 2024 report
Did the Fold6 and Flip6 actually sell poorly?
The production-plan story characterized preorder volume and overall sales as lower than expected, but it published no model-specific sales totals or percentage decline. Samsung’s public results statements cited here also did not provide Fold6 or Flip6 sell-through figures or call either model a failure. That leaves the scale of any shortfall unquantified.

- A premium foldable smartphone featuring an 8.0" Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display, 6.5" cover display, 200MP main camera, Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor, up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, 4,400mAh battery, and a slim 215g design.
Market indicators available at the time were not identical for the two models. In a December 2, 2024 analysis, Counterpoint Research reported DSCC estimates that Flip6 panel shipments were expected to fall by more than 10% compared with Flip5 panel shipments in 2023, while Fold6 panel shipments were expected to increase by mid-single digits year over year. These are estimates for display panels, not counts of finished phones sold to consumers, and they suggest different trajectories for the clamshell Flip and book-style Fold. Was the wider foldable market also slowing?
Yes, forecasts pointed to a tougher market, although the metrics and dates matter. DSCC expected Samsung’s total foldable panel procurement to decline by more than 20% in 2024, reaching its lowest level since 2021. It also forecast 5% growth in the foldable smartphone display market in 2024 followed by a 4% decline in 2025. These were forecasts about panels and the display market, not confirmed phone sales.
A later, separate Counterpoint Research measure found global foldable smartphone shipments grew 2.9% year over year in 2024 and forecast single-digit negative growth for 2025. Shipment growth and panel procurement are different measures; neither alone establishes how many Samsung phones customers purchased. Counterpoint Research’s March 2025 foldable shipment analysis

What did Samsung say publicly about foldables?
Samsung’s January 31, 2025 FY2024 results release said the Mobile eXperience business would strengthen its foldable lineup in 2025 to generate new customer demand. In its Q2 2025 results release, Samsung also described foldables as a focus of its second-half flagship smartphone sales plan. Neither statement confirmed the reported production figures, but both show the company continued to present foldables as part of its flagship strategy. How to interpret the reported cut
- It was reported, not confirmed: The 5 million target and 8.2 million comparison came from a secondary media account of trade reporting, not a Samsung production announcement.
- The sales claim lacks a numerical baseline: The account said results were below expectations but did not disclose Fold6 or Flip6 sales totals.
- Panel data is not phone sell-through: Display-panel estimates and procurement can signal supply expectations, but they are not equivalent to finished-phone output or customer purchases.
- The model picture was mixed: DSCC’s contemporaneous panel estimates projected a decline for Flip6 panels but mid-single-digit growth for Fold6 panels.
