Spoilers for Critical Role Campaign Four, episode 37, “Death to Tyrants.” Sam Riegel’s Wicander Halovar faces a choice between protecting his own life and freeing Tyranny from her family’s control. A secondary report says he chose the latter—a character-first decision that makes for compelling drama, though it is not a universal standard for how D&D should be played.
Who does Sam Riegel play in Critical Role Campaign Four?
Sam Riegel plays Wicander “Wick” Halovar, a human and scion of the Candescent Creed. Critical Role’s official Campaign Four page describes Wicander as someone whose faith and family loyalties are tested as he uncovers troubling truths about his religion.
Campaign Four uses a West Marches-style format with three rotating tables, and Critical Role says it is using the 2024 Dungeons & Dragons rules. That context matters: this is one character’s decision in a shared campaign story, not a prescribed strategy for every D&D table.

At the end of episode 36, assassins attack Wicander during a performance. Critical Role’s official recap of “Spectacle” quotes them shouting, “Death to the Sundered Houses! Death to tyrants!” That cliffhanger sets up the danger carried into episode 37.

What did Sam Riegel do in episode 37?
According to a Ranzware report published October 6, 2026, episode 37 continues the attack with Wicander downed and facing a series of choices from Game Master Brennan Lee Mulligan. The report says Riegel ultimately chose to free Tyranny from her family’s control rather than prioritize his character’s immediate chances of survival.
This account of the episode-specific dilemma comes from that secondary report; the official recap cited here covers the preceding episode, not episode 37. The available account supports the broad dramatic trade-off, but not a definitive rules explanation. It is therefore safer to describe the choice in narrative terms rather than present details about Warding Bond or death-saving throws as verified D&D mechanics.

What makes the choice compelling—and is it a rule for good D&D?
The drama comes from two priorities pulling in different directions: Wicander’s immediate survival and Tyranny’s freedom from family control. From a player’s perspective, tactical knowledge might favor the safer option. But a player can instead foreground what a character believes, values, or feels responsible for, even when that choice puts the character at greater risk.
That is the sense in which the moment can be read as raising the bar: it treats role-play not as decoration around a tactical encounter, but as a reason to accept meaningful consequences. That is an interpretation of the scene, not an objective ranking of Critical Role’s cast or a rule that every player should take the riskiest option. Tactical play, character-driven play, and the balance between them are all legitimate ways for a group to enjoy D&D.
