Short answer: Possibly—but only as part of a reported Microsoft promotion in December 2021. OnMSFT, Windows Central and BleepingComputer described banners shown to some users of Office installations Microsoft considered non-genuine. The reports said the banner offered up to 50% off Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, with BleepingComputer describing the discount as applying to the first year of an annual subscription. That coverage does not prove the offer is still active, available in your country or shown to every counterfeit-installation user.

What the reported discount was

Three contemporaneous reports described a “Get genuine Office” or similar in-product message that could appear in an Office installation Microsoft regarded as pirated or otherwise non-genuine:

  • OnMSFT reported the promotion on December 7, 2021.
  • Windows Central reported it on December 8, 2021.
  • BleepingComputer reported it on December 6, 2021 and said the 50% reduction applied to the first year of an annual subscription.

The coverage identified Microsoft 365 Personal and Microsoft 365 Family as the subscription choices. It did not establish a complete eligibility policy, a list of participating countries, the exact Microsoft-published prices, or how long the promotion would run.

Therefore, “50% off” is a historical description of that reported campaign—not a standing entitlement for anyone running an unauthorized copy of Office.

Is the discount available now?

There is no evidence in the available reporting that the 2021 banner remains a current, universal offer. Microsoft may change campaigns by country, account, product edition and date. A pop-up in an old installation, a forum post or a search result is not proof that the same terms can be claimed today.

A November 9, 2021 Microsoft Learn community question asked, “Has anyone been able to take advantage of the 50% offer to purchase Microsoft Office – appears in a pop up window?” The question shows what users were seeing at the time, but its anonymous community answer is not an official Microsoft announcement. You can read it at Microsoft Learn Q&A.

What a “Get genuine Office” warning means

Microsoft’s current guidance says a “Get genuine Office” message can indicate that the installed software is not legitimate. Microsoft advises removing the counterfeit installation before installing a genuine copy or Microsoft 365. Its support instructions cover Microsoft 365 and Office 2019 and include uninstall guidance for Office 2021 and Office 2016. See Microsoft’s genuine Office guidance.

Microsoft lists several risks associated with counterfeit software:

  • Exposure to malware
  • Corrupted files or data loss
  • Missed critical security updates

These are risks Microsoft identifies; they are not guaranteed outcomes for every unauthorized installation. Still, an activation warning is a sensible reason to stop relying on the copy rather than search for another crack or key.

What to do if Office on your PC is unauthorized

  1. Back up your documents. Copy important files to a trusted location before changing the installation.
  2. Remove the counterfeit Office installation. Use Windows’ installed-app settings or Microsoft’s uninstall instructions linked from its support page. Remove leftover unauthorized activators or cracks as well.
  3. Check the computer for threats. Run your installed security software and apply its recommended remediation before signing in to a Microsoft account.
  4. Choose a legitimate replacement. Buy or subscribe through Microsoft’s official purchasing flow, or use the browser-based option described below.
  5. Install and activate with your own account. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the license or subscription, then apply Office updates.

Paid Microsoft 365 versus free Office on the web

Microsoft’s support page points users toward genuine purchasing options. It also says Office on the web is available at no cost in a browser after signing in with a Microsoft account. The practical choice depends on whether you need installed desktop applications and subscription features.

How to evaluate a discount message safely

  • Open the offer only from the Office application or an official Microsoft domain; do not enter credentials on a page reached through an unsolicited email or crack bundle.
  • Read whether the reduction is limited to the first subscription year, a particular plan or a particular billing cycle.
  • Confirm the currency, renewal price and cancellation terms shown for your country before paying.
  • Do not assume buying a product key from a marketplace qualifies you for the historical promotion. The reports do not establish that.

Bottom line

The headline has a real historical basis: some reports from December 2021 said Microsoft offered users of non-genuine Office up to 50% off a first year of Microsoft 365 Personal or Family. It should not be treated as a current promise. If your installation shows a genuineness warning, follow Microsoft’s removal guidance, then either obtain a properly licensed subscription or use free Office on the web.
