Cofense reported that it observed 569% more malicious phishing emails in 2022 than in the comparison period used in its report. That is a finding from the company’s own email-intelligence data—not a verified count of all phishing email worldwide, and not a current trend rate.

What the 569% figure measures

The figure comes from Cofense’s 2023 Annual State of Email Security report. Cofense said its intelligence observed a 569% increase in malicious phishing emails in 2022. The company described a network of more than 35 million trained reporters and analysis of suspicious enterprise email. Dark Reading’s March 29, 2023 coverage also reported the finding and described the data as coming from a global network of 35 million users.

The percentage is a change in Cofense’s observed dataset, not an absolute email count or a population-wide rate. The cited sources do not provide an independent audit of the underlying dataset or methodology. The finding should therefore be read as a vendor-reported signal about what Cofense observed, rather than proof that every person or organization received 569% more phishing email.

Other findings in the same report

Cofense reported additional changes in its own intelligence and reporting. These figures measure different things and should not be treated as interchangeable with the 569% email increase.

Reported change What Cofense said it measured
569% increase in 2022 Malicious phishing emails observed
478% increase Credential-phishing-related Active Threat Reports published
44% increase Malware identified

The report also discussed activity involving Emotet and QakBot, business email compromise, Web3 technologies, and Telegram bots. Those are topics in Cofense’s observations, not evidence that each threat became more prevalent across all inboxes.

Why later phishing statistics may not be directly comparable

In its 2024 State of Email Security, Cofense reported a 37% increase in malicious emails detected in 2023 compared with 2022. That is a later company detection metric with a different stated period and wording; it is not a direct update to the 569% figure. Before comparing statistics, check the organization reporting them, what was counted, the time period and baseline, and whether the result is a percentage change or an absolute count.

How to recognize and handle a suspicious email

The FTC says phishing messages may impersonate a familiar organization or person and try to pressure recipients into clicking a link or sharing sensitive information. Treat an unexpected request cautiously, even if the sender name or branding looks familiar.

  • Be wary of urgent or alarming requests to click a link, open an attachment, or disclose information.
  • Do not rely on the displayed sender name alone to establish who sent a message.
  • If a message claims to come from an organization you use, contact it through a channel you already trust rather than using contact details or links in the message.
  • Use the FTC’s phishing guidance and its official reporting routes if you encounter a scam.

What organizations can do

CISA recommends enforcing phishing-resistant multifactor authentication (MFA) to the greatest extent possible. MFA helps protect accounts by requiring more than a password; phishing-resistant methods are intended to make it harder for an attacker to reuse credentials stolen through a fake sign-in page. CISA’s February 28, 2023 advisory also describes spearphishing as an initial-access route in a red-team assessment, illustrating why email defenses and account protections both matter.
