No reporting located for this article confirms that Sanghyun Lee has left his role as OpenAI’s Asia-Pacific public policy and public affairs lead. The most recent coverage found still names him in that position, in an August 18, 2026 ChosunBiz report. Nothing found says he left after six months or gives a final working date, so the claim as worded is not established.
What the reporting says about Lee’s role
- March 24, 2026: ChosunBiz reported that OpenAI had tapped Google veteran Sanghyun Lee to lead public affairs in Asia-Pacific. The described remit covers public policy and government relations.
- August 18, 2026: ChosunBiz again identified Lee as OpenAI’s head of public affairs for Asia-Pacific and quoted him on a policy-research initiative. This shows his attributed role at that date, not his status on any later date.
- After August 18, 2026: No report located names a successor, describes a resignation, or says Lee is no longer in the role. The absence of coverage does not prove he is still in post on October 9, 2026. It means the question cannot be settled from the reporting available.
Where the six-month figure comes from
The six-month element in the headline does not match any tenure reporting. Two other figures are easy to confuse with it.
- The start date. The earliest report of Lee’s appointment is dated March 24, 2026. Six months after that date falls around September 24, 2026. The reporting does not give an exact start date, so Lee’s tenure could have begun earlier or later than the report date.
- The project timeline. ChosunBiz reported on OpenAI’s 14 global AI-policy projects. The selected projects were reported to run for six months, with findings planned for release in 2027. Those dates describe the research projects, not Lee’s job.
How Lee’s role differs from other Asia-Pacific leadership roles
An August 28, 2026 report describes a separate set of Asia-Pacific leadership roles. Those reports do not indicate any change in Lee’s position, but they show how regional responsibilities are divided.
| Person | Role as reported | Report date | Remit described |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sanghyun Lee | Head of public affairs for Asia-Pacific (public policy and government relations) | March 24, 2026; August 18, 2026 | Public policy, government relations and government engagement; quoted on a policy-research initiative in August |
| Kiran Mani | Asia-Pacific managing director | August 28, 2026 | Regional leadership; Sandhya Devanathan reports to him |
| Sandhya Devanathan | Title not stated; reports to Kiran Mani | August 28, 2026 | Consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement and operations across Southeast Asia and Australia |
Mani’s and Devanathan’s remits are commercial and operational, while Lee’s is public policy and government affairs. A reference to a different executive does not show that Lee’s role changed. A TechCrunch overview dated August 26, 2026 discusses other OpenAI executive departures but does not name Lee.

What Lee said in August
ChosunBiz attributed the following statement to Lee, identified in that report as OpenAI’s head of public affairs for Asia-Pacific:
“We hope these research findings will help governments and societies design policies suited to local conditions and broaden public discussion on economic opportunity and social resilience in the AI era.”

What would confirm or rule out a departure
- A public statement from Lee, such as a post on a professional network, that names a last working day and gives a reason.
- An OpenAI announcement or spokesperson confirmation that names a successor or interim lead for the role.
- Reporting from ChosunBiz or another outlet that cites a source with direct knowledge of the change.
Until one of these appears, the claim should be treated as unconfirmed. Any reason for leaving should not be inferred from the other OpenAI executive exits reported in August, because none of those reports mention Lee.
