Meteorites contain organic compounds, including amino acids, and evidence that water altered the asteroids they came from. Those findings make meteorites plausible carriers of some prebiotic ingredients to early Earth. They do not show that meteorites carried organisms or prove how life began; NASA says the importance of meteorites as a source of materials for life on Earth remains unknown.
What does “organic” mean in meteorites?
Here, “organic” describes carbon-containing chemical compounds, not evidence of biology. Carbonaceous chondrites contain a substantial insoluble organic component as well as soluble compounds such as hydrocarbons, acids, polyols, amino acids, and amines. A NASA review describes this chemical diversity and notes that heating and water alteration on primitive asteroids could both form and destroy organic molecules (NASA Technical Reports Server review).
One example is hexamethylenetetramine (HMT), detected in the Murchison, Murray, and Tagish Lake meteorites. Experiments discussed by NASA show that water, ammonia, and methanol exposed to extraterrestrial photochemical and thermal conditions can produce HMT and other organics. Because HMT can break down during common analytical procedures, researchers used an extraction method designed to limit that degradation. This offers a plausible chemical pathway and illustrates an analytical challenge; it is not a complete account of life’s origin (NASA on HMT and meteorite chemistry).

NASA reports that the Hillsborough meteorite fell on July 16, 2024, and was recovered quickly. Classified as a CM carbonaceous chondrite, it contains microscopic fractures with sodium-rich material and fragile sodium-carbonate salts. Researchers interpret these as remnants of ancient brines—salty water—on the asteroid that produced the meteorite. They also found a diverse set of amino acids and other organic compounds. Rapid recovery helped researchers examine fragile compounds before prolonged exposure to Earth’s environment could contaminate the sample (NASA’s Hillsborough report).

- 🌠 LARGE METEORITE (20-32 grams Grams ) originally weighed over a ton before hitting Earth over 4000 years ago!
- 🌠 OUT OF THIS WORLD GIFT! Comes with an ID card and Certificate of Authenticity--ready for gift giving!
- 🌠 PROUDLY HAND-ASSEMBLED by our dedicated team in Eugene, OR, USA!
The result is evidence of water-driven chemical alteration on a primitive asteroid, not evidence that the asteroid hosted life. NASA meteorite researcher Mike Zolensky said, “Following the history of water through the solar system is an essential part of understanding the origin of life.”
How do returned asteroid samples add evidence?
Samples returned by spacecraft provide a different kind of evidence from meteorites that fall to Earth: they can be collected and curated through mission procedures, with sample context that helps scientists assess terrestrial contamination and the history of the material. The Ryugu and Bennu results complement meteorite studies, but they do not mean every asteroid had the same chemistry or water history.

Ryugu: findings and limits of a small sample
In NASA’s 2023 account of the initial soluble-organics study, an international team received 30 milligrams of Ryugu material for analysis. The amino-acid results were broadly consistent with those of some water-exposed carbonaceous meteorites. The analysis did not identify sugars or nucleobases, but that is not proof Ryugu lacks them: NASA coauthor Daniel Glavin noted that they may have been below analytical detection limits in the small sample (NASA’s Ryugu analysis account).

A 2025 abstract on NASA’s Technical Reports Server reports that Bennu samples contain 14 of the 20 standard amino acids used in terrestrial biology, all five nucleobases found in DNA and RNA, and approximately 10,000 nitrogen-bearing chemical species. The abstract also reports isotopic enrichments suggesting that some compounds or their precursors formed in a cold environment, such as a molecular cloud or the outer protoplanetary disk. Their distributions are consistent with formation and alteration during low-temperature aqueous processing on Bennu’s parent body (NASA Technical Reports Server: Bennu sample study abstract).

- Starborn Genuine Campo Del Cielo Meteorite Nugget 20-30 gram - 1 per order. Each Meteorite nugget is unique and will vary slightly, but will be similar to ones pictured in the images. Size approx. 1 by 3/4 inch, 20-30 grams
- These exciting meteorite fragments have a unique nugget shape caused by fractures in the natural crystalline structure of this Iron-Nickel Meteorite.
- The Campo Del Cielo Meteorite was discovered by the Spanish in 1576; it struck the earth approximately 5000 years ago in what is today Chaco Gulamba, Argentina.
These results establish the presence of a wide range of relevant chemistry in the analyzed material. They do not establish that the compounds were alive, that they assembled into living systems, or that Bennu represents all asteroids.

Yes, impacts could have delivered some organic ingredients, but the evidence does not establish how much they contributed or whether meteorites were an important source compared with other sources and processes. NASA’s educational resource says, “We don’t yet know if these meteorites were an important source of materials for Earth life, but it seems likely that they could have brought a lot of the CHNOPS elements to Earth for living things to later use.” CHNOPS refers to carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur (NASA Astrobiology: meteorites and life’s building blocks).

- AUTHENTIC METEORITE: Genuine iron meteorite specimen from outer space, featuring a distinctive dark fusion crust and unique surface patterns
- NATURAL FEATURES: Iron meteorite exhibits characteristic rough texture, pitted surface, and natural weathering marks from its journey through Earth's atmosphere
- Exquisite collectibles: Each specimen is completely unique in shape and texture, making it the first choice for meteorite collectors
- SCIENTIFIC VALUE: Iron meteorites contain rare metals and minerals formed during the early solar system's development
- DISPLAY WORTHY: As an impressive conversational material and educational tool, it contributes to a deeper understanding of space objects and planetary science
A NASA review abstract estimates that approximately 40 million kilograms of asteroid and fragment material impact Earth each year. That annual estimate is not a measurement of how much material reached Earth during the era when life began, so it cannot by itself quantify meteorites’ contribution to life’s ingredients (NASA Technical Reports Server review abstract).
