The available reports establish what markets expected ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s October 7, 2026, decision, but they do not confirm that the RBI raised rates or signaled further tightening. Before that meeting, the latest confirmed repo rate was 5.25%, and the Monetary Policy Committee had kept its stance neutral in August.

What was confirmed before the October decision?

At its August 5, 2026, meeting, the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee unanimously held the policy repo rate at 5.25% and retained a neutral stance. The resolution was reproduced by Track RBI: August MPC resolution. Reuters also reported the August hold and discussed the committee’s inflation outlook: Reuters report on the August minutes.

The October meeting was scheduled for October 5–7, with the decision due on October 7, according to Business Standard’s October 2 preview: meeting schedule and preview. That schedule does not itself establish what the committee decided.

What did economists expect?

A Reuters poll reported on September 28 found that 35 of 61 economists expected a 25-basis-point rate increase. That was a forecast, not an announcement by the RBI. Reuters described the case for a possible hike in the context of broader price pressures: Reuters report on the economist poll.

Reuters’ October 5 preview said a hike, if made, would be the first in nearly four years and would raise the rate from 5.25%. It also noted that the RBI had cut rates by a cumulative 125 basis points during 2025. Both the hike and its potential size were discussed before the October decision, not confirmed outcomes: Reuters pre-meeting preview.

Why was a rate increase being considered?

The pre-meeting debate centered on inflation that appeared to be broadening, resilient economic growth, higher global interest rates and uncertainty about supply-driven price pressures. Reuters reported that prices for nearly half of the inflation basket had risen at least 4% year over year in August, compared with about one-third in March. That pointed to broader price increases, but did not by itself determine the MPC’s decision.

Rank #2

In August, Reuters reported July headline consumer inflation of 4.45%, within the RBI’s 2–6% tolerance band, and identified 4% as the medium-term target. The August resolution forecast that inflation would rise in the near term and peak in the third quarter of fiscal year 2026–27, primarily because of food and fuel. Those were the committee’s August outlook and the reported July inflation figure, not an October forecast or reading.

Does the evidence show that further tightening was signaled?

No. The pre-decision reports and the August resolution do not establish whether the RBI raised the rate in October, changed its policy stance, or indicated that more hikes would follow. A rate increase alone would not prove that the committee had committed to a continuing tightening cycle; the actual resolution and Governor’s statement would be needed to assess its guidance.

For an accurate account of the October outcome, readers should look for the RBI’s October 7 resolution and statement. The key details are the rate decision, the committee’s vote, its stance, any changes to inflation and growth projections, and whether it describes future policy as data-dependent or signals additional moves.
