No evidence shows that GTA 6 caused Sony to raise PlayStation prices. Sony announced higher recommended prices for PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal in March 2026, citing global economic pressures. Separately, reports have described steep resale prices for some PS5 Pro units amid stock shortages. Those are different things: Sony’s official price change is documented, but a GTA 6-driven increase across PlayStation products is not.
What changed in PlayStation prices?
On March 27, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced new recommended retail prices for PS5 consoles, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal. In the United States, United Kingdom, Europe and Japan, the changes took effect April 2, 2026. Sony’s stated reason was “continued pressures in the global economic landscape”; the announcement did not attribute the increases to GTA 6. Sony’s announcement lists these recommended prices:

These are Sony’s announced recommended retail prices, not a guarantee that every retailer has stock at that price. Local prices and availability can vary; for other territories, Sony directs buyers to local retailers or direct.playstation.com.
Did GTA 6 cause the price increase?
The available official statements do not establish that connection. Sony cited economic pressure when it announced the changes, while Take-Two’s launch announcement and PlayStation’s post confirm the game’s date and platforms—not a link between GTA 6 and console pricing. Take-Two says GTA VI launches November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation’s announcement also gives that date and discusses PS5 features.

There is narrower evidence of expensive resale listings for PS5 Pro consoles. GamesRadar reported European prices reaching €1,400 amid stock issues on September 16, 2026; Tom’s Guide reported on October 7 that major retailers were out of PS5 Pro stock and cited a $1,400 pre-owned listing at GameStop. These are dated, outlet-reported examples—not Sony prices, average market prices or proof that GTA 6 caused a broad rise across PlayStation products. GamesRadar’s report and Tom’s Guide’s report describe those specific situations.
How much does GTA 6 cost, and what does the preorder include?
Take-Two lists the U.S. standard game price at $79.99. That is the price of the game, separate from the console. The U.S. PlayStation Store preorder listing also advertises one month of GTA+ with the preorder under an offer ending November 19, 2026. The membership renews monthly at its regular price unless canceled, so check the listing’s terms before ordering. The offer cited here is for the U.S. store; do not assume it applies in other countries.

Rockstar Support says the physical version contains a download code for the digital game. That means buyers should not assume a physical game disc is included. Rockstar’s platform information identifies PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as announced platforms.

Which PlayStation should you buy for GTA 6?
PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition
Either is an announced GTA 6 platform. The Digital Edition has a lower recommended price than the standard PS5 in each market listed above; compare the models and the games you plan to buy when deciding which suits you. A retailer’s live price may differ from Sony’s recommendation.

PS5 Pro
PS5 Pro is an option, not an established GTA 6 requirement. The available platform announcements do not say that the game requires a Pro model or confirm a specific Pro-only performance benefit. Its higher recommended price—and the possibility of inflated resale listings—makes it important to distinguish a new retailer sale from an individual pre-owned or resale price.
Xbox Series X|S
Xbox Series X|S is also an announced launch platform. If you do not already own compatible hardware, compare the price and availability of both platform families in your market rather than treating a PlayStation purchase as the only way to play.

Should you buy a PS5 before GTA 6 launches?
Buy based on the cost and availability you can confirm locally, not on the claim that GTA 6 made all PlayStation prices surge. Check whether the listing is for a standard PS5, Digital Edition or Pro; whether it is new or pre-owned; and whether the price is the retailer’s current offer or a resale asking price. Add the game’s $79.99 U.S. standard price to a budget only if you are buying in the United States, and account for any subscription that renews if you accept the U.S. preorder offer.

Sony’s new recommended prices are already effective in the four named markets. For buyers elsewhere, Sony’s announcement points to local retailers or direct.playstation.com; no single price in the announcement represents every country or retailer.
