Google News did briefly display Polymarket prediction markets in prominent places in April 2026, but Google said the inclusion was an error and that Polymarket was no longer surfacing in News. Futurism reported seeing markets in personalized “For you” feeds, on the Google News homepage and in search results. A follow-up check reported by Cointelegraph on April 12 no longer found Polymarket for the example query. Those reports document a short-lived incident—not the state of Google News on September 28, 2026.

What happened

Futurism reported that Polymarket markets appeared alongside or ahead of conventional news coverage during a period in April. Its observations included:

  • Polymarket links appearing in the personalized “For you” section, sometimes as the top result.
  • Markets appearing on the Google News homepage during the publication’s checks.
  • Event-related searches returning Polymarket market links among results.
  • Users being able to select Polymarket as a Google News source. Futurism said its search for Kalshi did not offer the same choice.

One example involved a query about whether ships would transit the Strait of Hormuz. Futurism said links from established outlets appeared with a Polymarket market concerning vessel passage.

Google told The Verge, in a statement quoted by Futurism, that “This site briefly appeared in Google News in error, and it is no longer surfacing in News.” Google also said Google News is intended for sources that create content about current issues and important topics and that sites must meet eligibility policies.

Cointelegraph reported on April 12 that its check of the same example query no longer returned Polymarket results. That is evidence of removal at that time, not proof that the service has never reappeared.

Is Polymarket currently prominent in Google News?

The available reports do not establish the current position. They cover the April incident and an April 12 follow-up, while a September 2026 status would require a new, dated check using the relevant Google News feeds, homepage and searches. It is therefore inaccurate to state as a present-tense fact that Google News is now prominently featuring Polymarket bets instead of journalism.

The reporting also does not establish how Google’s ranking system produced the placement, how many people saw it, exactly how long it lasted or whether it resulted from an algorithmic mistake, a configuration problem or another technical issue. Complaints described by Futurism reaching back to late March—and one report reaching back to January—indicate when users said they noticed something, not when the placement began.

Why the Google Finance connection should not be treated as an explanation

Futurism noted that Google had announced an arrangement involving Polymarket and Kalshi data for Google Finance. The publication explicitly said it was unclear whether that arrangement had anything to do with Polymarket appearing in Google News. Finance data integration and News eligibility are separate products; the reports provide no basis for claiming that one caused the other.

A market price is not a news report

Polymarket is a prediction-market platform. A contract price reflects trading on a defined outcome and is commonly read as a market-implied probability. It is not, by itself, verification that an event happened or that a claim is true.

The Associated Press has described Polymarket’s international platform as a crypto-funded, blockchain-based market, distinct from a more centralized, U.S.-dollar-funded U.S. operation regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The U.S. platform offers a narrower contract set. Those distinctions depend on jurisdiction and can change, so a reader should identify which service and market rules apply before interpreting an odds figure.

Question Prediction-market price Journalistic report
What it represents Trading participants’ prices for a defined outcome A reported account of events or claims
How it is produced Orders, trades, liquidity and changing prices Reporting, sourcing, verification and editorial review
Uncertainty Embedded in the price and market design; liquidity and participant incentives matter Should be explained through sourcing, corroboration and explicit uncertainty
What a reader can inspect The contract wording, resolution rules and trading history The evidence, sources, methodology and corrections policy

Displaying an odds market in a news interface can blur those categories. A percentage beside a headline may look like a reported fact even when it is only a tradable estimate about a future or disputed outcome.

What recent research says about citing prediction-market odds

A September 2026 arXiv preprint by Hazem Ibrahim and Yasir Zaki studied relationships between Polymarket trading and news citations; it did not study Google News ranking or this incident. The authors linked 173.7 million signed trades from 2024–2025 to news coverage. Among 6,990 articles mentioning prediction-market venues, their matching process identified 1,582 sentences quoting odds and tied 918 of those sentences to a specific market.

The preprint reports that, after price dislocations—movements of at least five percentage points backed by concentrated one-sided trading—the market citation rate was about 33% higher than a matched baseline in the following days. Prominence was a stronger predictor of citation than the size of the move. The authors estimate that moving a market five percentage points and having that move cited corresponds to roughly $0.7–1.0 million in their own “epistemic leverage” measure. That is a methods-dependent estimate, not a universal cost to manipulate a market, and the paper is a preprint rather than a final peer-reviewed publication in the cited record.

How to read a Polymarket link if it appears in News

  1. Read the contract definition. Check the exact outcome, deadline, location and resolution source. A market about “ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz” may define transit differently from a headline’s wording.
  2. Separate probability from fact. Treat the displayed price as a market-implied estimate, not confirmation that the event occurred or will occur.
  3. Check liquidity and activity. A price from a thin or concentrated market can move sharply and may not represent broad information.
  4. Find independent reporting. Look for named sources, direct evidence, on-the-ground reporting and corrections standards from established outlets.
  5. Check the timestamp. Prices change continuously; a screenshot or cached result may no longer describe the market.

What the incident does—and does not—show

  • It shows that Polymarket markets were reported in Google News feeds, the homepage and search results during a brief April 2026 period.
  • Google characterized the appearance as an error and said Polymarket was no longer surfacing in News.
  • A dated April 12 check no longer found the example result.
  • It does not prove that Google intentionally replaced journalism with betting markets, that a Finance integration caused the placement or that Polymarket is absent from Google News today.
  • It does not establish Google’s ranking mechanism, audience reach or the duration of the exposure.

The defensible conclusion is narrower than the original headline: Google News briefly surfaced Polymarket markets prominently in April 2026, Google said that was an error, and the evidence supplied here is insufficient to describe the platform’s status months later.
