Google’s December 2023 Gemini demo was not a continuous, live voice-and-video exchange. Google said it created the video from recorded footage, then prompted Gemini with still frames and typed text. The model’s outputs were real, according to Google; the controversy was that the polished edit looked more spontaneous and real-time than the disclosed workflow.
What the Gemini demo appeared to show
In “Hands-on with Gemini: Interacting with multimodal AI,” published alongside Google’s Gemini announcement in December 2023, a person speaks while changing drawings and objects in view. Gemini seems to follow the evolving scene and answer quickly by voice. That presentation could reasonably lead viewers to understand they were seeing an ongoing interaction with live video and spoken prompts.
The video description did disclose that “latency has been reduced and Gemini’s outputs have been shortened for brevity.” That note explained that the final video was edited for speed and length. It did not explain that Gemini had been prompted with footage-derived still images and text rather than a continuous live video-and-voice feed. Google’s Gemini announcement and contemporaneous reports from Ars Technica and TechCrunch describe the distinction.

On December 7, 2023, after questions about the demo, Google’s spokesperson told Ars Technica: “We created the demo by capturing footage in order to test Gemini’s capabilities on a wide range of challenges. Then we prompted Gemini using still image frames from the footage, & prompting via text.” The spokesperson also said the voiceover used real excerpts from the prompts that produced the outputs. This account describes an image-and-text prompting workflow, not a live spoken conversation in which Gemini continuously watched the scene.

Google had published a developer post the day before the demo controversy, showing multimodal prompts that combined images and text. Its examples included sequences for rock-paper-scissors, a coin trick and cup shuffling, along with sample prompts and outputs. The post described these as multimodal prompting and said Google planned to make Gemini available for people to try in Google AI Studio. The developer post gives readers a way to see the underlying prompt format.
Why viewers questioned the presentation
The difference between the edit and the prompt examples matters because instructions and context can shape an answer. In the developer post’s rock-paper-scissors example, the prompt showed the gestures together and asked, “What do you think I’m doing? Hint: it’s a game.” The planets example included an instruction to consider distance from the sun. Those prompts demonstrate image understanding, but they do not establish that the model independently followed every movement in real time or inferred the intended task without contextual guidance.

Google DeepMind research vice president Oriol Vinyals described the video to TechCrunch as illustrating “what the multimodal user experiences built with Gemini could look like” and said it was made to inspire developers. That is a concept-demo rationale. It does not remove the difference between a video that appears to show live, spontaneous interaction and one produced with selected still frames, text prompts, voiceover excerpts and editing.
Was the Gemini demo fake?
“Fake” is a fair shorthand for the misleading impression critics saw in the presentation, but it needs qualification. Google did not say it fabricated Gemini’s underlying responses; its account was that the outputs were genuine and came from prompts based on footage stills and text. The evidence supports a criticism of how the interaction was represented, not a claim that Gemini produced no real multimodal outputs or had no image-understanding ability.

The distinction is between capability and demonstration. The published examples support that Gemini could respond to image-and-text prompts. They do not, by themselves, prove the stronger capability the finished video seemed to depict: an uninterrupted, real-time exchange driven by live video and voice.

What the controversy does—and does not—establish
- Established: Google described making the demo from captured footage, still image frames and typed text prompts.
- Also disclosed: The final video reduced latency and shortened outputs, but that disclosure did not identify the still-frame prompting method.
- Not established by this episode: That Gemini’s displayed outputs were fabricated, or that the model lacked image-understanding capability.
- Outside the scope of the 2023 record: Gemini’s current features, availability or commercial plans. The controversy concerns the December 2023 video and the method Google described at the time.
