The strongest report that could fit the headline said two Google researchers associated with Gemini planned to leave for Anthropic, Claude’s maker. It did not establish that either move was completed, or that the departures changed the performance of Claude or Gemini. A later, separate Google announcement about Gemini 4 Argon adds context, but the available reporting does not identify a definitive Claude-versus-Gemini winner.
What was the reported move?
On June 29, 2026, the Los Angeles Times, republishing Bloomberg reporting, said Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel planned to leave Google for Anthropic. The report cited people familiar with the matter; neither researcher nor Anthropic publicly confirmed the plans in the account, and Anthropic declined to comment.
The report described Adler as having worked on Google’s AI coding effort and Pritzel as having been involved in training AI systems. It characterized the two as key contributors to Gemini internally. That is evidence of a potentially significant hiring development, not proof that the researchers had joined Anthropic or that their work would transfer directly to Claude.
What the report does—and does not—show
A talent move, not a model comparison
Hiring experienced researchers can matter to a lab’s future research and product work. But the June report did not measure any resulting change in either company’s models. It included no head-to-head test, benchmark result, or evidence that Claude had become more capable than Gemini because of the reported plans.

The broader hiring contest
The Los Angeles Times account also quoted Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis on competition for staff. “There’s a lot of talent movement between all the leading labs and we win our fair share of the top talent. We have by far the biggest and broadest research bench of any of the labs out there,” he said at an event in Cannes. He called the market “the most ferociously competitive it’s ever been in the tech industry.”
The same article said DeepMind engineers were nearly 11 times more likely to leave for Anthropic than the reverse, citing SignalFire’s 2025 industry analysis. That figure is reported through the article; it should not be read as a general measure of the quality or performance of either company’s AI models.

What changed later with Gemini?
On September 30, 2026, Axios reported that Google had unveiled Gemini 4 Argon to a small group of cybersecurity partners. Wider access was expected after additional testing, with paying subscribers first in line, according to the report. This was a separate Google model announcement, not evidence that the June hiring story was about Gemini 4 or a response to Anthropic.

Gemini products head Tulsee Doshi told Axios, “Argon is a well-rounded model that has frontier capabilities across several domains.” Those are Google’s claims about the model. Axios also reported differing employee assessments and Google’s denial; the account does not establish broad independent testing or public availability.

How to judge whether Claude or Gemini is ahead
Staffing news and product capability answer different questions. To compare the assistants meaningfully, check the same task on the same date and record the exact model version, access tier, and price. Treat company benchmark claims as claims unless independent results support them, and distinguish limited partner access from general availability.
A separate TechCrunch report dated June 30, 2026 covered Claude Sonnet 5, including its agent capabilities, subscription availability, and launch-era pricing. Its benchmark and safety descriptions were Anthropic’s claims. Those launch-era terms should not be assumed to describe current pricing or access, and they do not by themselves settle a comparison with Gemini.
