Reuters reported on October 3, 2026, that three sources said Ethiopian federal forces had retaken Alula Aba Nega Airport in Mekelle. Reuters said it could not immediately verify the assertions. The report concerns the airport—not a confirmed takeover of Mekelle city.
What was reported on October 3
Reuters cited three sources for the claim that troops from the Ethiopian National Defence Forces had regained control of Alula Aba Nega Airport. The sources included someone with knowledge of events in the city, a humanitarian source, and a Mekelle resident. Reuters said it could not immediately verify their accounts. Reuters’ report was republished by StreetInsider.
The resident told Reuters they could hear gunfire outside the city centre. The resident also described Tigrayan fighters leaving posts and alleged that government facilities were being looted. Those details remain attributed accounts, not independently verified findings.

Alula Aba Nega Airport is about 10 km (6 miles) from Mekelle’s centre, according to Reuters. A change in control of the airport does not establish that federal forces had entered or taken the city.

Al Jazeera, citing Reuters and AFP, reported accounts that TPLF fighters and leaders were leaving Mekelle. But a local journalist cited by Al Jazeera said federal forces had not yet been seen inside the city. Al Jazeera said it could not independently confirm the claims, noting restricted media access and significant communications blackouts. Al Jazeera’s October 3 account therefore does not establish a federal takeover of Mekelle.
How the airport became part of the renewed fighting
Reuters reported that opposition forces seized the airport on September 23, 2026, as renewed fighting began. It said the airport was one of three in Tigray taken by opposition forces. A source close to the TPLF told Reuters that federal troops and allied militias had encircled Mekelle; Reuters said it could not immediately reach the party for comment.

On September 23, the Associated Press reported that regional forces in Tigray had taken control of the airport that morning. Ethiopian Airlines said it was suspending flights to Mekelle, Axum, and Shire “due to the current situation,” without further detail. That reports the impact at the time; the available accounts do not establish whether or when flights resumed. The AP report covers the seizure and flight suspensions.

The wider conflict remains unresolved
The reported airport change occurred amid renewed fighting between Ethiopian federal troops and Tigrayan fighters. The Associated Press said on September 24 that the fighting had effectively shattered the peace pact signed in Pretoria in November 2022. The airport report does not establish that fighting has ended or that the agreement has been restored. The AP report on the peace pact describes that wider context.
