Futurism reported that Elon Musk posted a reworded version of a joke about Delta’s in-flight Wi-Fi and AI agents after machine-learning engineer Matt Hardy had posted a similar line. The outlet framed the episode as Musk “stealing” the joke, but the reported sequence and wording do not by themselves establish his intent or prove legal plagiarism.
What was the Delta Wi-Fi joke?
Hardy’s reported post connected AI-agent sandboxing—restricting an agent’s access to systems or networks—with the limited internet access associated with flying. Futurism quoted him as writing: “we should just sandbox the [AI] agents by giving them Delta Wifi.”

The punchline is that putting an AI agent on a Delta flight would keep it from reaching the internet. Musk’s reported version read: “Best way to sandbox an AI is to put it on a Delta flight – it will have no chance of accessing the Internet!” The wording is similar, though not identical: both turn the same airline-connectivity idea into a joke about limiting an AI system’s network access.

What did Futurism report about the timeline?
In its October 2, 2026 report, Futurism said Musk replied to Hardy’s post with a laughing emoji on September 30, then published his own version a day later. That sequence, if accurately reported, suggests Musk had seen Hardy’s joke before posting his. The original X posts were not independently verified here, so the chronology and quoted wording should be understood as Futurism’s account.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Did Musk steal the joke?
“Stole” is the report’s editorial characterization, not a verified finding about Musk’s intent. The reported resemblance and sequence make the question of attribution understandable, but they do not establish whether Musk deliberately copied Hardy, whether he regarded the post as an adaptation, or whether the joke had another source.
It is also important to distinguish an accusation of joke-taking from a legal conclusion. The available account does not establish legal plagiarism or support a broad claim about Musk’s career. A careful description is that Futurism reported Musk posted a close rewording after reacting to Hardy’s earlier post.

Who posted the earlier joke?
Futurism identified the earlier poster as Matt Hardy, a machine-learning engineer and co-founder of Proof of Human. The outlet reported about 11,000 likes for Hardy’s post and about 155,000 for Musk’s. Those are time-sensitive counts reported in the October 2, 2026 article, not independently confirmed totals or lasting measures of audience response.
Futurism also quoted replies to Musk’s post, including “Lol almost as funny as the original post” and “Claiming other people’s work as his own is Musk’s entire career.” These are examples selected by the outlet; they should not be treated as representative of X users overall.
