Not necessarily: DSL could share telephone copper wiring with voice service, but that technical fact does not tell us whether a particular BellSouth plan required a paid voice subscription or added a line-related charge. The historical record documents a $10-per-month broadband commitment in AT&T’s 2006–2007 merger with BellSouth; it does not establish that every customer’s full bill was $10 or reveal an individual household’s savings.

Could BellSouth DSL and phone service use the same line?

Yes. DSL carries data over telephone copper wiring and can coexist with voice service on that wiring by using different frequency ranges. The FCC described DSL’s use of the higher-frequency portion of the loop and voice’s use of the lower-frequency portion in a 2005 regulatory proceeding. That technical arrangement shows that DSL did not inherently require a second physical telephone line; it does not establish what BellSouth charged under every retail plan.

A 1998 BYTE article also describes BellSouth DSL equipment and filters used with voice devices. It offers historical technical context, not authoritative evidence of BellSouth contract terms or billing rules.

What did the historical $10 broadband commitment mean?

FCC materials concerning the 2006–2007 AT&T/BellSouth merger describe a commitment to offer basic broadband service to new retail consumers for $10 per month, and the merger record also discusses a standalone DSL commitment. These were regulatory commitments in a defined historical setting—not a verified current BellSouth price, nor proof that a particular customer qualified or paid that amount in total.

The cited materials do not establish an individual customer’s complete monthly bill. In particular, the $10 figure should not be read as an all-in total that necessarily included any voice subscription, equipment, taxes, fees, installation, or other charges.

How to tell whether a phone-line charge erased the savings

The answer depends on the customer’s actual plan and the alternative being compared. A valid calculation needs the same market and billing period, the applicable plan terms, and a dated bill or tariff. Include only charges the customer was actually required to pay, and account for eligibility and any time limits on an offer.

  • Recurring costs: Compare the full monthly bill, including a voice line if the plan required one.
  • Offer terms: Check who could qualify, whether the offer was limited to new customers, and how long the price applied.
  • Comparable service: Confirm the speed, limits, and availability of both options for the same location and period.
  • Other charges: Include equipment or installation costs only when the relevant offer or bill documents them.

The reviewed FCC records and historical technical material do not provide market-specific plan prices or a complete customer bill with which to calculate net savings. Without those records, whether a line charge erased the savings remains unresolved.

Can these historical figures answer what BellSouth DSL costs today?

No. The cited sources document historical technology and merger commitments; they do not verify a current BellSouth offer, address-level availability, eligibility, or present-day pricing. A current cost comparison would require current provider or regulator records for the reader’s location.
