Yes—Bloomberg reported on June 24, 2024, that Apple rejected Meta’s proposal to integrate Meta’s AI chatbot into iPhone software months earlier. The report described only brief, preliminary discussions, based on people familiar with the matter; neither Apple nor Meta publicly confirmed the private talks. A contemporaneous account said the companies spoke in March, but the discussions did not advance to formal negotiations.
What Bloomberg reported
According to Bloomberg’s reporting, Meta approached Apple about bringing its chatbot into Apple’s AI experience. Apple declined before the companies reached a formal partnership. The discussions were characterized as exploratory rather than a finalized deal, and the report did not establish that Apple ever planned to ship Meta AI on iPhones.
The account came from unnamed sources familiar with the discussions. Apple’s public statements and Meta’s public announcements reviewed for this story do not independently confirm the conversation or its outcome.

Why didn’t Meta AI come to iOS?
Contemporaneous coverage of Bloomberg’s report said Apple reportedly considered Meta’s privacy practices insufficiently stringent. That is a reported factor, not an on-the-record Apple explanation and not a proven sole reason for the decision. The available reporting does not disclose the full negotiating history, technical terms or any financial arrangement.

Apple’s public privacy position
At its June 10, 2024 WWDC keynote, Apple presented a privacy model built around processing many requests on the device and using Private Cloud Compute for more complex tasks. Apple said those cloud servers run on Apple silicon and that user data would not be retained or exposed. Those are Apple’s descriptions of its own architecture; they do not independently prove why Apple rejected Meta.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, said during the keynote: “You should not have to hand over all the details of your life to be warehoused and analyzed in someone’s AI cloud.” The remark expressed Apple’s product positioning, rather than confirming the motive in the reported Meta discussions.

What Apple announced instead
Apple announced Apple Intelligence for iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia at WWDC 2024. It said the initial external chatbot integration would be with ChatGPT, with other AI models potentially supported in the future.

What the report does—and does not—establish
- Bloomberg’s account supports saying Apple rejected a proposed Meta chatbot integration before the June 24, 2024 report.
- The available coverage describes preliminary March discussions that did not reach formal talks.
- Privacy was reported as a consideration, but the evidence does not establish an exclusive or officially confirmed reason.
- Apple’s public AI plan centered first on ChatGPT and left room for other models in the future.
- There is no basis in these sources for claiming a deal value, revenue split, model-performance comparison or continuing negotiations.
How big was Siri’s role in Apple’s strategy?
During the WWDC keynote, Kelsey Peterson said Apple handles 1.5 billion Siri voice requests every day. That is an Apple-stated figure from 2024, not an independently audited measure and not evidence about the Meta proposal. It helps explain why Apple framed Apple Intelligence as an extension of its own software and assistant ecosystem rather than simply installing a third-party chatbot.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was Meta AI ever officially available through Apple Intelligence?
Not on the evidence available here. Apple officially announced ChatGPT integration, while the Meta arrangement was reported as a private proposal that Apple rejected. The sources do not establish an Apple Intelligence feature that used Meta AI, nor do they establish that the companies later resumed negotiations. Compatibility and model support can change, so current Apple Intelligence details should be checked against Apple’s latest documentation rather than inferred from the 2024 announcement.
