AMD did not confirm a delay to the Instinct MI455X. In February 2026, AMD software executive Anush Elangovan rejected a report that MI455X mass production had slipped into 2027, saying shipments remained on target for the second half of 2026. Later, AMD listed July 23, 2026, as the accelerator’s launch date, and Reuters reported that AMD CEO Lisa Su said the Helios rack system built around it was in full production, with shipments scheduled to begin at the end of Q3 2026. Those are different milestones, so the later updates do not establish that every customer had received a system.

What did AMD say about the MI455X delay report?

On February 18, 2026, HotHardware reported that SemiAnalysis had said MI455X mass production was delayed until 2027. AMD Vice President of Software Development Anush Elangovan responded: “BS. Right on target for H2 2026.” He also said MI455X was “right on target for shipments in 2H 2026”. HotHardware’s February report attributed the delay claim to SemiAnalysis; the underlying SemiAnalysis article was not reviewed here.

That was a denial of a reported schedule change, not a detailed production-status statement. HotHardware noted that mass production and shipments can refer to separate milestones. As a result, AMD’s statement about second-half shipments did not by itself settle whether mass production had moved.

What changed after the February dispute?

AMD’s current MI455X product page lists July 23, 2026, as the accelerator’s launch date. On that date, AMD announced the MI400 Series and its Helios rack-scale platform at Advancing AI. Reuters reported that CEO Lisa Su said Helios was “in full production” and that shipments were slated to start at the end of Q3 2026. The shipment timing is an executive schedule statement reported by Reuters, not confirmation that all customers had received systems. AMD also said OpenAI expected to bring Helios online beginning in Q4 2026, with deployment accelerating during 2027. That describes an announced customer expectation, not a completed deployment. AMD’s announcement

Why “mass production,” “shipments” and “deployment” are not interchangeable

A hardware program can pass through several milestones. One does not automatically prove another has happened, and a statement about a later step may leave an earlier production detail unclear.

Milestone What it describes What the cited updates establish
Low-volume production Initial production at limited volume. Not established by the cited February or July statements.
Mass production Production at larger, sustained volume. The February report attributed a 2027 delay claim to SemiAnalysis; AMD’s rebuttal did not directly specify mass-production timing.
Shipment Products or systems leaving AMD or a manufacturing partner for delivery. Elangovan said MI455X shipments remained on target for the second half of 2026. In July, Su’s reported schedule was for Helios shipments to start at the end of Q3 2026.
Rack production Building the integrated Helios rack system, not only the accelerator chip. Reuters reported Su said Helios was in full production.
Customer deployment A customer receives and brings a system into service. AMD said OpenAI expected to start bringing Helios online in Q4 2026; this was an expectation, not confirmation of completed deployment.

What are MI455X and Helios?

AMD describes MI455X as a fifth-generation CDNA accelerator designed specifically for Helios, a rack-scale system for AI inference, training and fine-tuning. AMD’s listed specifications include CDNA 5, TSMC 2 nm and 3 nm FinFET process technologies, 320 billion transistors and 432 GB of HBM4 memory. These are AMD-published specifications. AMD’s described Helios configuration combines 72 MI455X GPUs with 18 sixth-generation EPYC “Venice” CPUs, Pensando networking and ROCm software. AMD also named Bull, HPE, Lenovo and Supermicro as system OEMs, and Sanmina and Wiwynn as infrastructure partners. These are company announcements about the platform and partner plans. AMD’s Helios announcement

AMD claims Helios can deliver up to 30% more tokens per dollar than its leading competitive solution. That is a vendor comparison; the announcement does not, on its own, establish an independently verified performance result.

So, did AMD delay the MI455X?

The February exchange did not prove that MI455X mass production was on schedule or delayed: it presented an analyst claim about mass production and an AMD rebuttal about shipment timing, which are not the same milestone. Later, AMD listed a July 23 launch date, and Reuters reported Su saying the Helios rack was in full production with shipments scheduled to begin at the end of Q3 2026. The available statements support an evolving schedule update, but they do not establish broad customer availability or completed deployment.
