Yes—but only in a specific historical context. A Network World report published April 27, 2010 said Alibaba accepted PayPal on AliExpress, its marketplace for international small and medium-sized retailers and wholesalers buying from Chinese suppliers. The report did not announce PayPal across Alibaba’s services, and it does not establish what AliExpress, Alibaba.com or Taobao supports today.
What the 2010 announcement covered
The reported change applied to AliExpress, not to Alibaba’s entire business. Network World described AliExpress as serving buyers outside China who wanted relatively small orders of goods already in stock. Alibaba.com was presented as a different service, typically used for larger quantities of customized products, with payment often handled offline.
Alibaba spokesperson Linda Kozlowski described PayPal as “It’s simply another option for payment.” In the report’s account, the reason for adding it was to give users more choice at checkout.
Which payment methods were listed on AliExpress?
For the period covered by the report, AliExpress payment options included:

- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
- Accept contactless payments, chip cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay from anywhere, with improved connectivity, extended battery life, and enhanced security. Pay one low rate for every tap or dip.

- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
- PayPal
- Visa
- MasterCard
- Bank transfer
The story said Alipay was not an AliExpress checkout option at that time. It was used to provide escrow service instead. Escrow and checkout are different: the buyer selected another payment method, while Alipay’s role was to hold or manage funds under the transaction arrangement.
AliExpress and Alibaba.com in the report
| Service | Audience described in 2010 | Typical order described | Payment arrangement described |
|---|---|---|---|
| AliExpress | International small and medium-sized retailers and wholesalers sourcing from Chinese companies | Smaller orders of goods already in stock | PayPal, Visa, MasterCard and bank transfer were listed; Alipay provided escrow but was not listed as a checkout method |
| Alibaba.com | Buyers sourcing from Chinese suppliers | Larger quantities of customized goods | Payment was often handled offline; the report did not describe PayPal as a general Alibaba.com option |
Does Alibaba accept PayPal today?
This 2010 report cannot answer that present-tense question. It documents a historical AliExpress arrangement only. Payment methods can vary by marketplace, seller, buyer location, currency and date, so current availability must be checked in the checkout flow or in the applicable platform’s current help documentation.

The report did not say that Taobao accepted PayPal. It concerned AliExpress and contrasted that marketplace with Alibaba.com. No conclusion about Taobao’s PayPal support follows from this article.

Why was Alipay mentioned?
The report placed the payment change in a broader competition involving Alibaba, PayPal and eBay. Earlier in April 2010, Alibaba had announced plans to invest 5 billion yuan (US$702 million) over five years in Alipay for international expansion, according to Network World. That was a historical plan reported at the time, not a current investment commitment.
