The available report does not say a smoke alarm helped two brothers escape a house fire. A December 2017 KBND archive account of a Hillsboro, Oregon, fire says the home had no working smoke alarms; it credits a service dog with waking one brother, who escaped through a window and alerted his sleeping brother. The same archive describes a separate trailer fire in which an alarm alerted residents. Those are different incidents and should not be conflated.

What happened in the Hillsboro house fire?

The KBND regional-news archive says firefighters responded to a house fire near Brookwood and Drake in Hillsboro after a passerby saw flames and called 911. In the account, a service dog woke one resident. He escaped through a window and alerted his sleeping brother. The archive excerpt does not provide a specific date for the fire, and it is not a fire department statement. Read the KBND archive.

The report says the house did not have any working smoke alarms. It therefore does not support the claim that an alarm woke or saved the brothers.

Why might the title mention a smoke alarm?

The same archive page contains a separate report about a trailer fire in which an alarm alerted residents. That is a different incident from the Hillsboro brothers’ house fire; the available account does not establish that the two stories are related.

Where to install smoke alarms and how to maintain them

The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) recommends smoke alarms in each bedroom, outside every separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. Interconnected alarms are recommended so that when one sounds, they all sound. Follow the instructions for the specific alarm you install. USFA smoke alarm guidance.

  • Test alarms monthly.
  • Replace the whole alarm 10 years from its manufacture date.
  • For battery-powered and hardwired alarms, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for battery maintenance, which varies by alarm type.

Make and practise a home fire escape plan

USFA says residents could have less than two minutes to escape after a smoke alarm sounds. Plan to leave immediately rather than stopping to collect belongings. USFA home fire escape plan guidance.
