Yes—but only in a narrow sense. In 2017, a system developed by Tsinghua University and iFlytek scored above the pass threshold on the written portion of China’s clinical physician qualification exam. It did not receive a medical license, pass the separate practical-skills assessment, or demonstrate that it could practice medicine independently.

What exam did the robot take?

The system, called “智医助理” (Medical Assistant), was jointly developed by Tsinghua University’s Department of Electronic Engineering and iFlytek. Tsinghua described participation in the 2017 clinical physician qualification written comprehensive test as a development milestone. The test took place on August 26–27, 2017, during the examination period.

According to Tsinghua and contemporaneous reporting by Xinhua, the system answered the same paper as human candidates at the same time. It did so in a designated room without internet access or signal, under the supervision of examination invigilators and notaries; the process was recorded. The reported conditions describe a supervised test, not an unsupervised clinical setting.

What score did the robot get?

Tsinghua reported that Medical Assistant scored 456 points, above the 360-point pass threshold for the 2017 written test. About 530,000 candidates took that year’s national examination, according to the university. The score establishes performance above the written-test threshold in that exam; it does not make the system equivalent to a licensed physician.

The 2017 written paper covered basic medicine, medical humanities, clinical medicine and preventive medicine, and Tsinghua said it encompassed about 2,700 knowledge points. The university described 600 objective questions divided into four timed units. These are details of the 2017 exam, not current specifications for medical licensing examinations.

Why passing the written test did not make it a doctor

An exam score and a professional license are different things. The reported result concerned the written comprehensive test only. It does not show that the system received a physician qualification certificate, completed the separate practical-skills assessment, or met the requirements for legal authorization to practice.

Written questions test knowledge under set conditions. Clinical work also involves practical examination, interpreting a patient’s circumstances, communication and decisions with consequences for a real person. A framework discussed in the Future Healthcare Journal in 2021 distinguishes written-exam performance from broader clinical and interaction requirements. The 456-point result should therefore be understood as a specific test achievement, not proof of independent diagnosis or treatment ability.

What the developers said about the system

In its 2017 institutional account, Tsinghua said the team used semantic-tensor and multi-semantic deep-learning methods. It also described reasoning approaches based on key-point semantics, context and evidence chains. Those are the developers’ descriptions of their system; the reported exam score is not, by itself, an independent evaluation of those methods or of clinical safety.

What happened after the exam?

A March 2018 Xinhua report described a related iFlytek AI general-practice assistant beginning a trial at a community hospital. The report said it could help review medical histories and suggest prescriptions, while doctors still had to sign diagnostic reports and prescriptions. That account documents a trial at that time; it does not establish the system’s present-day deployment or capabilities.

The accurate takeaway

The 2017 result was a notable demonstration that Medical Assistant could score above the pass line on a supervised written physician-qualification test. It was not a robot becoming a doctor: the exam result did not confer licensure, cover the practical assessment, or prove that AI could independently care for patients.
