The claim that a supertanker voyage from the U.S. Gulf Coast to China cost $76 million—and was ten times its pre-war level—could not be verified from the available lane-specific reports. The strongest directly comparable figures are a Platts assessment of $29.5 million for a 270,000-metric-ton USGC–China voyage on September 4, 2026, and a separate indicative assessment of $240.74 per metric ton on October 6. Neither confirms a $76 million fixture or the tenfold comparison.
What the reported Gulf Coast–China figures show
Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, assessed freight for a 270,000-metric-ton U.S. Gulf Coast–China run at $29.5 million on September 4, 2026. S&P reported this as a record for that route assessment, above the previous $29.3 million record set on March 4, and said the September assessment had risen 21.6% week over week. S&P Global Energy’s report describes a market assessment, not evidence of a $76 million contract.
A second figure is not directly interchangeable with that lump sum. CommodityScope’s October 6, 2026 USGC–China VLCC series listed $240.74 per metric ton on a 270,000-metric-ton cargo basis. The page characterizes the figure as indicative: it is not a vessel-specific offer, confirmed fixture, or agreed charter-party rate. It names no vessel or charterer. CommodityScope’s assessment page therefore does not verify a $76 million deal.

The $29.5 million Helios booking was a different route
S&P’s September report also said ST Shipping booked the VLCC Helios for an October 13–16 U.S. Gulf Coast–East voyage at $29.5 million. That vessel-specific booking was for USGC–East, not the USGC–China route assessment. The matching price does not make the two reports the same voyage.

- detailed 12-inch scale model representing a modern commercial oil tanker. This replica celebrates the "titans of trade," featuring the classic flat-deck design, complex piping systems, stern bridge superstructure, and bulbous bow found on real-world supertankers.
- Unlike standard ship models, this piece showcases the intricate network of deck piping, valves, and catwalks characteristic of liquid cargo vessels. The multi-colored design (green deck, white superstructure, black/red hull) provides an authentic industrial look without the need for painting.
- Designed as a static display piece for logistics professionals, oil and gas industry workers, merchant mariners, and naval engineers. Its sturdy, flat-bottomed hull sits stable on any desk, shelf, or bookcase, making it a perfect professional accent for a corporate office or home study.
- This is a specialized model intended for display and appreciation of maritime engineering
Gulf of Oman–China rates describe another lane
Reuters reported that a separate Gulf of Oman–China supertanker route had reached roughly Worldscale 450, or about $11.50 per barrel, by September 11, citing Baltic Exchange data. The report linked broader rate pressure to conflict-related risk and thinner tanker availability. This is a different loading geography and a different rate basis, not confirmation of a U.S. Gulf Coast–China charter. Reuters via Investing.com reports that route and context.
A daily index is not a voyage price
Gulf Insider’s October 7 commentary put a Baltic US Gulf–China VLCC index at $473,958 per day on Monday, up 20% on the week. A daily index or earnings figure is not a voyage lump sum, and the article is secondary commentary rather than a primary fixture record. Gulf Insider’s commentary should be read on that basis.

What must be established before calling it a $76 million charter
A valid comparison needs to identify the same kind of voyage and the same kind of price. In particular, the $76 million claim needs a verifiable source and date, plus the vessel and charterer, loading window (laycan), cargo basis, route definition, and contractual terms. “Ten times higher” also requires a named pre-war benchmark date and a comparable rate measure. Those details are not established by the cited reports.
- Route: confirm the loading and discharge points; USGC–China is not Gulf of Oman–China or USGC–East.
- Cargo and vessel: establish the tonnage and vessel class used for the comparison.
- Price type: distinguish a confirmed fixture from a market assessment or an earnings index.
- Unit: do not treat a voyage lump sum, USD per metric ton, Worldscale rating, USD per barrel, and USD per day as equivalent.
- Dates: match the assessment or fixture date and define the pre-war baseline explicitly.
The available sources show unusually high tanker freight measures in several markets, but they do not establish the specific $76 million USGC–China fixture or a tenfold increase against a defined pre-war level.
