The claim that a coffee maker generated more than 1,000GB of network traffic in 10 days is unverified. The available sources do not identify the machine, explain how the traffic was measured, or confirm the reported reaction from an IT professional. Connected coffee machines can send data for monitoring, but that fact does not establish the headline’s figure or its cause.
What is known about the 1,000GB claim?
No original report or credible account confirming the figure was identified in the sources available for this article. Without the original measurement and its context, it is not possible to say whether the figure is accurate, what device it describes, or what the reported traffic contained.
The headline also does not establish what “traffic” means. A reliable account would need to distinguish uploaded data from downloaded data, internet traffic from transfers on a local network, and useful payload from retransmissions or other network overhead. It would also need to identify the measurement source, exact time window, and whether other devices or activity were included.

Can a connected coffee machine send data?
Yes. Some connected machines and coffee-service systems use network connections for monitoring and operational purposes. That general capability is not evidence that a particular machine transferred anything close to 1,000GB.

Commercial coffee-machine examples
Melitta Professional describes its commercial connected coffee solutions as using an IoT hub that can integrate machine data through LTE, WLAN, or LAN. What would be needed to explain the traffic?
There is not enough incident-specific evidence to attribute the claim to telemetry, malware, surveillance, video streaming, a software fault, or any other cause. Before drawing a conclusion, an investigation would need details such as:
- The original report and the person or system that measured the traffic.
- The coffee maker’s make, model, firmware, and network configuration.
- The exact start and end times, plus whether the total was upload, download, local-network transfer, or combined interface bytes.
- Whether the measurement included retries, repeated downloads, firmware updates, backups, or traffic from other devices.
- A vendor or network-operator explanation, if available.
Those distinctions matter because a total-byte figure without a measurement method cannot show what the machine sent, where it sent it, or why.

How to check whether a smart appliance is using unusual data
The following are general troubleshooting steps, not actions confirmed in the reported case:
- Open your router or network-management app and check per-device usage for the appliance. Router menus vary, so consult the router’s current documentation if you cannot find a device-usage or traffic-monitoring view.
- Check whether the router separates upload and download totals, and note the measurement period. A single combined total may obscure whether data was sent out or received.
- Confirm that the listed device is actually the coffee maker. Compare its name or network address with the device details shown by the router; a label alone may not be conclusive.
- Check the appliance maker’s current documentation or support channels for the model’s connectivity and data features.
- If usage remains unexplained, record the model, firmware, router measurements, and timestamps before contacting the manufacturer or network provider.
Would a separate IoT network help?
Separating smart appliances from a primary Wi-Fi network can limit how those devices interact with other devices on the home network. Network separation is a general security measure, not an explanation for the headline’s figure and not a guarantee of lower internet usage. A device on a separate network may still communicate externally; isolation does not by itself determine what data it sends or how much.
Why the wider growth of IoT does not verify this story
ITPro’s IoT explainer, updated 5 March 2025, attributes broad ecosystem figures to IoT Analytics: approximately 16.6 billion IoT devices in 2023, a forecast of about 18.8 billion by the end of 2024, and a forecast of nearly 40 billion by 2030.
