For the Town of DeWitt in Onondaga County, New York, recent reports say a ban on short-term rentals will begin January 1, 2027, covering stays of 29 nights or fewer. The same reporting says reservations already made may continue through December 31, 2026. The enacted local law was not available in the sources reviewed, so owners and guests should confirm the effective date, definition and transition terms with the Town before relying on them.
What does the reported DeWitt ban cover?
A report summarizing the September 28, 2026 Town Board meeting says the Board adopted a local law prohibiting short-term rentals across the Town’s zoning districts, with the measure to be codified as Article 25. The Town’s official website is the starting point for locating current ordinances or contacting the Town Clerk; the controlling enacted text should be checked directly.
WSYR-TV, in a report syndicated by AOL on October 3, 2026, describes the ban as covering rentals of 29 nights or fewer. That is a reported threshold, not a verified quotation from the ordinance. The law text was not available in the reporting reviewed, so its precise definition and any treatment of borderline stays remain unconfirmed.
When does the ban start, and what happens to existing bookings?
The October 3 WSYR-TV report says the prohibition starts January 1, 2027 and that existing bookings may continue through the end of 2026. It does not establish that every reservation is protected regardless of its dates, later changes, or the circumstances of the property.

If you have a reservation that runs close to the transition date, or are considering changing one, check the final law and confirm the platform’s contract and cancellation requirements. Do not assume a booking that extends beyond December 31, 2026 is covered by the reported transition.
Can owners switch to longer-term leases?
A lease longer than the reported 29-night threshold may be an alternative to explore, but it is not a guaranteed loophole. Before offering one, verify how Article 25 defines the rentals it prohibits and check any other rules that apply to the property and tenancy.

- Check relevant landlord-tenant, tax, property and contract obligations; seek advice from a New York real-estate or municipal-law attorney if the stakes warrant it.
A lease form can help organize paperwork, but it cannot determine whether a particular property or rental arrangement complies with local law.

| Option | Timing | What to verify or change |
|---|---|---|
| Honor an existing reservation | The report says current bookings may continue through December 31, 2026. | Confirm the transition provision in the enacted law and review the specific reservation and any dates beyond 2026. |
| Stop taking short-term bookings | Prepare for the reported January 1, 2027 start date. | Confirm the effective date and scope in the law; close affected calendar dates and address existing contracts with guests and the booking platform. |
| Explore longer-term leasing | Potentially relevant for arrangements beyond the reported 29-night threshold. | Confirm the law’s definition and review tenancy requirements and operational changes before offering a lease. |
| Get property-specific advice | Before changing a valuable booking or rental plan. | Have a qualified local attorney review the enacted text and the property’s facts. |
For a high-value reservation or an uncertain lease arrangement, obtain the final Article 25 and its publication details from the Town Clerk before making a decision.

Why did the Town adopt the reported prohibition?
Reports attribute the action to residents’ concerns about noise, parking, safety, trash and party use. These are reported complaints and rationales, not independently established measurements of conditions across the Town.

The reporting reviewed does not provide the final law’s penalty schedule, exceptions, enforcement procedure or any grandfathering beyond the reported booking transition. Ask the Town Clerk for the enacted Article 25 and verify those terms in its text.

WSYR-TV’s October 3 report attributes this enforcement comment to Town Supervisor Max Ruckdeschel: “Just the operation of a short-term rental is a violation, so there is really very little investigation beyond the confirmation that it is being advertised as a short-term rental.” This is a reported statement about the approach; the actual legal consequences must be checked against the enacted law.
