DevGotchi is a free VS Code extension that adds a virtual pet-style avatar and a small RPG loop to your editor. Your coding activity earns experience points and in-game currency, your avatar’s stats decay when you neglect them, and bosses appear when your repository or editor shows problems such as build errors or merge conflicts. It is a game layered on top of ordinary work. Its Marketplace listing makes no claim that it makes you more productive or healthier.

What DevGotchi does

The extension lives in a side panel inside VS Code. Its listing describes an avatar tracked by four stats, Focus, Motivation, Energy and Health, which decay over time. Activity restores them and boosts your progress. The loop is built around ordinary editing habits rather than a separate game window.

Experience points and Coffee Beans

According to the Marketplace listing, saving files, making commits and fixing bugs all earn XP. Commits also earn Coffee Beans, the in-game currency. The listing also mentions quests and achievements, which give the loop a set of goals beyond the constant trickle of XP.

Focus sprints

A focus sprint is a timed session you start yourself. The listing offers three durations, and the rules attached to each are the same:

#1 Best Overall
Tamagotchi Original - Rainy Angel
  • The Original Tamagotchi digital pet in a stylish Rainy Angel shell design allows you to feed your character, turn lights on/off, play with it, give it medicine, flush after it has used the bathroom, check its health meter and praise your Tamagotchi Angel character
  • A tapping feature is also included! Tap the shell to bring your Angel Tamagotchi character back from a stroll. Or use the tap feature to scare off a bat that tries to steal candy
  • With Angel programming play the Shooting Star mini-game to keep your Tamagotchi Angel character happy!
  • How you nurture your Obaketchi Angel (ghost character) will determine which Tamagotchi Angel character you will get. There are 5 adult Tamagotchi Angel characters, plus secret characters
  • Comes with 1 Tamagotchi device on a chain to take with you everywhere. Battery (CR2032) included. For Ages 8+
  • 15 minutes, 25 minutes or 50 minutes, selected when you start the sprint.
  • While a sprint is running, XP is multiplied by 1.5.
  • Finishing the sprint awards a completion bonus.
  • Cancelling early forfeits that completion bonus, so the sprint only pays off if you see it through.

The listing states these rules as product design. It does not report measurements of whether sprints improve concentration or output.

Boss encounters

Bosses are where DevGotchi ties the game to your code rather than to a timer. The listing describes encounters triggered by repository and editor state, including active lint or build errors and unresolved merge conflicts. A separate code-smell boss appears when open files exceed 300 lines. The mechanic is a playful way of making visible problems feel like enemies, and it is the part of the extension most directly connected to real code health.

Rank #2
Tamagotchi Original - Neon Lights
  • The Original Tamagotchi digital pet you loved back in 1997 is back with the original programming! Feed it, turn lights on/off, play with it, give it medicine, flush after it’s used the bathroom, check it’s health and discipline your Tamagotchi if he bothers you when he’s happy, fed and all cleaned up
  • Includes Character game where you have to guess which way the Tamagotchi will move next
  • A purple shell with neon lights and 'Tamagotchi', dark pink frame, green buttons, and original programming and characters
  • Raise your Tamagotchi from egg to child to Adult and how you take care of it will decide which of the 7 Adults you’ll get. Comes with 1 Tamagotchi on a chain to take with you everywhere
  • Battery (CR2032) included. For Ages 8+

Installing it and starting your first session

You need VS Code with access to the Visual Studio Marketplace. Installation takes a few steps:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Extensions view with Ctrl+Shift+X on Windows and Linux, or Cmd+Shift+X on macOS.
  2. Search for DevGotchi, select the extension published under that name, and choose Install.
  3. Open the Command Palette with Ctrl+Shift+P or Cmd+Shift+P.
  4. Run DevGotchi: Open Panel. The avatar panel opens beside your editor.

The listing mentions a 10-minute idle threshold. It is a configuration value, not a population statistic. Check the extension’s settings to see exactly how it is applied before you rely on idle time counting toward or away from your progress.

Rank #3
Tamagotchi Original - Mermaid (Updated Logo)
  • The Original Tamagotchi digital pet you loved in 1997 is back with the original programming. Feed it, turn lights on/off, play with it, give it medicine, flush after it’s used the bathroom, check it’s health and discipline your Tamagotchi if he bothers you when he’s happy, fed and all cleaned up
  • Includes Character game where you have to guess which way the Tamagotchi will move next.
  • Colorful mermaid shell with pink 'Tamagotchi' and buttons, and original programming and characters, and updated logo
  • Raise your Tamagotchi from egg to child to Adult and how you take care of it will decide which of the 7 Adults you’ll get. Comes with 1 Tamagotchi on a chain to take with you everywhere.
  • Battery (CR2032) included. For Ages 8 plus

Where your data goes

The Marketplace listing says DevGotchi has no telemetry, no accounts and no external servers. Ordinary progress is stored in VS Code’s local storage, and you can export and import it as JSON. Two features are different: quest packs can be imported from a URL, and Team Mode shares progress through the repository. Both are opt-in. The table shows where each kind of data sits.

Data or feature Where it lives Leaves your machine? How it is enabled
Avatar stats, XP, Coffee Beans, achievements VS Code local storage No, unless you export Automatic once the extension runs
Progress export and import A JSON file you choose Only when you move the file yourself Manual export or import
Quest packs from a URL Fetched from the address you supply Yes, a network request is made to fetch the pack Opt-in, with an explicit confirmation before fetching
Team Mode progress Files committed to the repository Yes, through git to anyone with repository access Opt-in

These are statements from the listing. The sources reviewed for this article did not include an audit of the extension’s source code or a test of its network behaviour, so treat them as the publisher’s description rather than independent verification.

Rank #4
Tamagotchi Original - Lots of Love
  • The Original Tamagotchi digital pet you loved back in 1997 is back with the original programming! Feed it, turn lights on/off, play with it, give it medicine, flush after it’s used the bathroom, check it’s health and discipline your Tamagotchi if he bothers you when he’s happy, fed and all cleaned up
  • Includes Character game where you have to guess which way the Tamagotchi will move next!
  • Sweet hearts on a pink shell with white 'Tamagotchi', light pink buttons, purple frame and original programming and characters
  • Raise your Tamagotchi from egg to child to Adult and how you take care of it will decide which of the 7 Adults you’ll get. Comes with 1 Tamagotchi on a chain to take with you everywhere!
  • Battery (CR2032) included. For Ages 8+

Team Mode and shared progress

Team Mode is the only feature that makes your progress visible to others. Progress is stored in the repository, so anyone who can read that repository can see it. That is a sensible design for a team that already shares code, but it is worth deciding deliberately before you enable it on a private project or a repository with contributors outside your organisation.

What the extension does not show

The creator’s first-person framing is the premise of the project. In his write-up, as indexed in the search result we were able to read, he says he will grind for game achievements but struggles to stay focused during debugging, and he presents the extension as putting a game inside work. That describes his motivation. It is not evidence about developers in general.

Best Value
Tamagotchi Paradise - Orange Tropics
  • ZOOM. Nurture with a spin! Zoom into Paradise! Turn the dial to take care of your Tama. Zoom from cell to space for traditional nurturing play - clean the poop, feed them delicious food and make them feel better! Play new mini games and nurturing activities and shop in the new LAB MODE.
  • CHARACTERS. Raise more than 50,000 Tamas. Depending on the environment and the way you take care of your Tama, you can grow over 50 different characters in 12 species, with over 30 new Tamas. Plus, BREED play creates more Tamas by bringing parent's genes to the next generation.
  • CONNECT. Connect with friend's device directly to see how your Tamas interact - is it a good match or a bad match? And, now, when you connect, you can play games with or against your friend! ** Please note that the connect mini-game is not available in "Tamagotchi Paradise - Pink Land / Blue Water / Purple Sky / Jade Forest.” **
  • THREE FIELDS. Start in the Tropics field and unlock the Glacier and Forest fields for different play and Tamas. Plus, purchase are expansions to expand the field!
  • AND MORE. The Orange Tropics device has a pretty pink shell with orange top, dial and buttons

No independent study of DevGotchi’s effects on productivity, focus or wellbeing was located. The listing describes features, not outcomes. The word “Burnout” appears as one of the game states in the interface. It is a label inside the game, not a clinical assessment, and it should not be read as a measure of how you are doing.

Who it suits

  • A good fit if you want a light, self-directed game around routine work, you already use VS Code, and you are happy with the four stats and the boss mechanics as playful feedback.
  • Proceed carefully if you plan to import quest packs from unfamiliar URLs, since each import fetches from the network. Read the confirmation before accepting.
  • Think first before enabling Team Mode on any repository whose access list you do not control.
  • Not a substitute for real productivity tools or tracking methods if your goal is measurable output. The listing does not support that use.

Cost, support and in-game extras

DevGotchi is free to install, according to its Marketplace listing. The listing includes a GitHub Sponsors button, which is optional creator support rather than a paid feature or a partner arrangement. Items such as the “Ergo Chair” and “Mech Keyboard” are virtual upgrades inside the game. You do not need any physical equipment or other product to use the extension.

What is not established

The sources reviewed did not confirm the current version number, the original release date or the installation count. The Marketplace page is the place to check those values when you install, because they change over time. If you are deciding whether the game is worth your time, the features described above are the verifiable part; the claims about productivity and work ethic are the creator’s own premise.
