You can use an ESP32-C5 to control and connect a home energy monitor, but the chip alone is not a complete electricity meter. For useful household readings, choose the measurement approach first: a suitable metering IC or a carefully designed sensing and metering chain must measure the electrical quantities, while the C5 handles data collection, processing, and connectivity.
What role does the ESP32-C5 play?
Espressif’s ESP32-C5 datasheet, version 1.5 dated September 3, 2026, lists dual-band 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth LE, IEEE 802.15.4, and peripherals including SPI, I2C, GPIO, and an ADC. Those features can support networking, system control, and communication with measurement hardware, depending on the board and firmware.
The cited datasheet does not characterize the ESP32-C5 as a dedicated energy-metering IC. An ADC and current sensor by themselves do not establish a reliable household energy measurement: the design must also account for the voltage signal, current sensing, signal conditioning, calculations, calibration, and the service topology being measured.
Choose the measurement topology before the board or schematic
Start by defining the electrical service and what you need the monitor to report. The project title alone does not specify single-phase or poly-phase service, a target accuracy, the installation jurisdiction, or a particular ESP32-C5 board. Each choice changes the measurement hardware and installation requirements, so a single universal schematic or parts list would be misleading.

- Service topology: Establish whether the installation is single-phase or poly-phase and which conductors and circuits the monitor must cover.
- Measurements: Decide whether you need RMS voltage and current, active/reactive/apparent power, accumulated energy, or additional power-quality information.
- Sensor and range: Select a current-sensing method and range that suit the conductor arrangement and metering design. A current transformer (CT) is one documented option, but it still needs suitable interface and signal conditioning.
- Accuracy and calibration: Set a system-level accuracy objective, then evaluate the full sensing, metering, calibration, and installation design. A component’s stated capability does not certify the completed monitor.
- Installation and safety: Determine the applicable local requirements and how the design will achieve appropriate isolation and safe installation. The cited component documentation does not provide a jurisdiction-specific DIY mains procedure.
Compare the two main measurement approaches
A practical architecture separates metrology from connectivity: measurement hardware produces readings, and the ESP32-C5 receives them over a suitable interface such as SPI. There are two broad ways to build that measurement hardware.
| Approach | What it involves | When it may fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Analog sensing chain with a suitable metering implementation | Current and voltage signals are sensed and conditioned, then processed by a suitable metering design. | When you need flexibility over sensor type or want to develop the measurement chain around the required service. | Microchip’s metering material lists shunts, CTs, and Rogowski coils as sensing options. The appropriate sensor, conditioning, phase coverage, and calibration depend on the design. |
| Dedicated metering IC or evaluation platform | A metering component calculates electrical quantities and communicates readings to the controller. | When the IC’s phase coverage, functions, and interface match the project and a compatible implementation is available. | The ADE9153A is documented as a single-phase example with SPI. Its evaluation shield documentation names Arduino Uno, Arduino Zero, and ESP8266 compatibility—not ESP32-C5 compatibility. |
For a poly-phase design, Microchip’s reference material covers poly-phase metering and links the ATM90E32AS. That makes it a relevant direction to investigate when the service requires multiple phases; it does not, by itself, establish a complete ESP32-C5 design or installation-ready circuit.

What a dedicated metering IC can provide
Analog Devices describes the ADE9153A as a single-phase metering IC with RMS measurement, active, reactive, and apparent power or energy functions, and an SPI interface. Its product documentation also specifies an 88 dB signal-to-noise ratio and describes mSure autocalibration and Class 1/Class 2 support.
These are manufacturer specifications and capabilities of the metering component, not a guarantee of system accuracy or a blanket certification for a DIY assembly. The ADE9153A may be a candidate when its single-phase scope and measurement functions fit, but the final sensor interface, circuit, calibration, and installation still need to be designed and validated.

Connect the metering hardware to the ESP32-C5
SPI is a documented interface on both the ESP32-C5 platform and the ADE9153A. That supports a high-level design in which the metering hardware supplies readings to the C5, which can then handle local logic and network communication. It does not prove that a particular metering board can be wired directly to any ESP32-C5 development board.
- Identify the exact C5 board. Confirm that it uses an ESP32-C5 and consult its board documentation for power requirements, pinout, and access to SPI and GPIO.
- Identify the exact metering hardware. Check its interface, power and logic levels, sensor connections, and intended phase topology against its own documentation.
- Plan the interface. Verify the SPI signals and any additional control or status pins on both devices. Do not assume matching connector labels imply electrical compatibility.
- Develop and validate the measurement path. Test the selected sensing, conditioning, calculations, and calibration approach against a defined accuracy objective before treating readings as dependable household measurements.
- Add connectivity after measurement is established. Use the C5’s wireless capabilities for the project’s chosen communications and control functions; network connectivity does not improve the underlying metrology.
Choose a CT only after defining its application
A CT can sense current without requiring the measured conductor to be cut, but “use a CT” is not a complete design instruction. Match the CT to the expected current range, conductor fit and arrangement, and the input requirements of the selected meter. The meter’s documentation and the CT’s documentation must together support the intended interface and signal conditioning.

Microchip’s metering material lists CTs alongside shunts and Rogowski coils. These are not interchangeable merely because each can be used to sense current; the appropriate option depends on the service, measurement circuit, and installation method. In particular, a current reading alone is not the same as a complete energy measurement.

Household mains measurement involves hazards that cannot be addressed by choosing an MCU or metering IC alone. The cited manufacturer sources describe component features and metering approaches; they do not certify a DIY mains installation or supply a safety procedure for a particular jurisdiction. Do not treat a component description, development board, or example architecture as evidence that a mains-connected prototype is safe to install.
Likewise, an IC’s accuracy-related features do not establish the accuracy of the finished monitor. Sensors, circuit design, installation, calibration, and the measurement method all matter. Select and validate the complete system for its intended use rather than transferring a component-level specification to the assembled device.
Quick Recap
A sensible project plan
- Write down the service type, number of phases, conductors or circuits to monitor, required electrical quantities, and accuracy objective.
- Choose a measurement approach and sensor that fit those requirements; check phase coverage before selecting a metering IC.
- Choose an ESP32-C5 board only after confirming the required pins, SPI access, power arrangement, and wireless implementation in that board’s documentation.
- Review the actual metering, sensor, board, and installation documentation together. Resolve electrical compatibility and applicable safety requirements before building a mains-connected prototype.
- Validate measurement performance and calibration as a system before relying on readings for household energy decisions.
