The 2026 Stack Overflow Developer Survey finds that 45.1% of respondents feel “complacent at work.” Among the respondents who answered the follow-up driver question, 21.1% named “Burnout/tech fatigue” as the primary reason. The survey does not show that burnout is rising, does not measure clinical burnout, and does not establish that AI caused it. Its AI findings describe adoption, conditional trust, and reported worries, not job losses that have already happened.
What the 2026 survey measured
Stack Overflow published the 2026 Developer Survey on October 6, 2026. Fielding ran from June 23 to August 5, 2026. The published results include 30,903 valid responses from 169 countries. This is the sixteenth annual edition, covering 103 questions and 467 technologies. The overview is at https://survey.stackoverflow.co/2026.
Recruitment shapes what the numbers can support. The survey was promoted on Stack Overflow properties and to members of Stack Overflow’s email list who had opted into research opportunities or announcements. The methodology page reports 39,266 rows recorded in that window, of which 30,903 were valid. The results therefore describe people who chose to answer an online survey through a developer platform. “Complacent at work” is a workplace category, not a burnout diagnosis
The headline figure comes from a satisfaction category. The overview reports 8,516 respondents, or 45.1%, in “Complacent at Work.” The label describes how respondents rated their own working situation. It is not a clinical screen, and the survey does not diagnose burnout as a health condition.

A follow-up question asked those who feel complacent: “If you feel complacent at work, what is the primary driver?” The data page for that question shows 8,312 respondents in its table, and 1,753 of them (21.1%) chose “Burnout/tech fatigue.” The 21.1% is therefore a share of the follow-up table, not a share of all developers and not a share of the 8,516 in the overview. The two bases differ, and the published pages do not reconcile them, so each figure should be read against its own denominator. These are response categories chosen by people who already described themselves as complacent. They show which explanations respondents selected from a fixed list. They are not a causal analysis, and burnout is only one of several reasons given.

Does the survey show burnout is rising?
The TechRadar headline calls the findings a “concerning rise” in burnout. The published 2026 figures do not establish that. A measured increase would require the same question, with the same wording, response options, respondent population, and fielding method, asked in earlier years. The 2026 pages report one year of results and do not supply a comparable earlier series for this question.
The accurate formulation is that the 2026 survey reports burnout or tech fatigue among the reasons respondents gave for feeling complacent at work. Saying the survey “finds” or “reports” that is supported. Saying burnout has risen is not, unless a like-for-like trend is published.

How many developers use AI at work
The workplace AI-use question shows high adoption among the respondents who answered it. The published results are below.

The survey also records worries about consequences such as skill loss and job replacement. These are concerns respondents report. They are not a measured rate of people who lost work because of AI, and the published material does not provide such a rate.

TechRadar’s October 8, 2026 coverage, by Christian Cawley, quotes Stack Overflow CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar. He said: “Developers are historically a highly skeptical group, and over the last year, as AI agents become rapidly more autonomous, that skepticism now acts as a critical safeguard.” He also said: “Trust is not a given when it comes to developers. It is earned through transparency, source attribution, and rich technical context.” These are Chandrasekar’s views as quoted by TechRadar, not findings of the survey. Does AI cause the burnout responses?
The survey does not test that link. The complacency question, the driver question, and the AI questions are reported side by side. A respondent who selected burnout as a driver may also use AI tools, and a respondent who worries about job replacement may not feel burned out. The published tables do not cross these answers in a way that would show cause, so the two findings should be reported as separate observations.
How to report these figures accurately
- Use “complacent at work” for the 45.1% figure, not “burned out.”
- Give 21.1% its base: 1,753 of the 8,312 respondents in the follow-up table.
- Describe the survey as a single 2026 result unless a comparable earlier series is cited.
- Present AI use, sentiment, trust, and job worry as four separate measures.
- Attribute the CEO’s remarks to Chandrasekar as quoted by TechRadar.
Used this way, the 2026 figures support a narrower and more defensible story: a large share of respondents describe their work as complacent, a minority of that group names burnout or tech fatigue as the main reason, and most respondents who answered the AI-use question report using AI tools, with trust that depends on conditions.
