The Detroit Free Press’ 2026 voter guide is a candidate-questionnaire resource for Michigan’s Nov. 3 general election. It lets readers look up responses on issues including data centers, taxes and affordability, but it is not a news investigation or an editorial-board endorsement. Treat answers as candidates’ own statements, not independently verified facts.
What the Free Press voter guide covers
The guide focuses on Michigan’s Nov. 3, 2026, general election. It highlights the governor’s race, a U.S. Senate contest and contests that could affect control of the Michigan Legislature, as well as other statewide offices, congressional seats and state legislative races. Its questionnaire includes prompts about data centers, taxes, affordability and other issues. Read the Detroit Free Press voter guide.
The Free Press describes the guide as separate from its news reporting and editorial-board endorsements. It says it removes responses containing false or unverifiable claims, personal attacks or foul language, while leaving other responses unedited. That editorial process does not mean every remaining assertion has been independently fact-checked.

If you cannot find a district or candidate, the guide includes the reader-facing question, “Don’t see your district or candidate? Here’s why.” Some races may not be included in the guide’s coverage; absence from the guide is not evidence about a candidate’s views.
How to compare candidate responses fairly
- Compare the same question across candidates. Keep the prompt and issue consistent so differences in answers are easier to see.
- Make response status explicit. The Free Press invited candidates in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties and some statewide races, and says staff followed up to ensure candidates received the questionnaire. Some candidates did not participate. Label a missing response as no response or not participating when that is what the guide indicates; do not infer a position from silence. See the guide’s participation information.
- Separate a position from a proven fact. A candidate’s answer describes what that candidate says or proposes. For factual assertions, look for independent reporting or primary evidence before treating the claim as established.
- Assess the proposal, not just the slogan. Note how specific it is, what evidence or reasoning the candidate gives, which level of government could act, and whether the response explains how the proposal would work. These are useful comparison questions, not scores assigned by the Free Press.
Where to get issue background beyond the answers
Candidate responses can show where contenders say they stand, while nonpartisan issue guides can help explain the underlying policy questions. Detroit Future City and the Citizens Research Council of Michigan’s Detroit Issues Guide 2026 discusses housing, public transit, public education, taxes and business attraction, and crime and public safety without endorsing candidates or parties. Read the Detroit Issues Guide 2026.

Use that background as context, not as a substitute for reading candidates’ actual responses. The accessible Free Press guide material does not establish detailed candidate positions on data centers or affordability; consult the linked questionnaire answers and corroborate factual claims before attributing a specific stance.
