Build the island around three clearly different signals: whether the assistant is waiting for its wake phrase, whether a voice conversation is active, and whether it needs approval to make a consequential change. Treat the mascot as supporting personality—not the status system—and treat a 14px wake strip as a design constraint to validate, not a proven accessible size.

Start by separating listening, conversation, and approval

The central interface question is easy to phrase: “How do I tell the difference between if Copilot is only listening for the wake word or if I’m in a Copilot Voice conversation?” Microsoft uses that question in its Windows support guidance, which makes the distinction a useful model for your own assistant: wake-word listening is not the same state as an active conversation. A pending approval is a third state, not a variation of either one.

Microsoft documents Hey Copilot as opt-in. In its implementation, an on-device wake-word spotter uses a 10-second audio buffer in memory; Microsoft says the buffer is not recorded or stored locally. Once the phrase is detected, audio from when it was detected is sent to the cloud to help answer the user. These details describe Microsoft’s feature, not wake-word systems generally. Microsoft’s Windows voice-chat support page also describes a floating UI that appears after wake detection, microphone-use indications while Hey Copilot is enabled and the app is running or while a conversation is happening, and an X control to end the conversation.

For your island, define at least these states and make each recognizable without relying on color or motion alone:

  • Wake listening: Wake activation is enabled and the assistant is waiting for its phrase. Say so directly; do not imply that a full conversation is underway.
  • Active conversation: Make capture or conversation status apparent and provide a visible, operable way to stop it.
  • Approval required: Explain what change is proposed and wait for a deliberate decision. Do not make this look like passive listening or routine progress.
  • Inactive or ended: Show that the assistant is no longer listening for the wake phrase or that the conversation has ended, as applicable.

Amazon’s voice-interface guidance likewise says people should be able to tell when a device is active and detecting wake words, and recommends a microphone on/off control for hands-free voice activation. Use this as a design principle, not as proof that a particular desktop layout works. Amazon’s Alexa Voice Interoperability Human Interface Design guide emphasizes the importance of these recommendations to customer trust.

Put approval before consequential changes

Give an approval request its own clear state: a request card or expanded island that identifies the proposed action, provides a deliberate decision point, and stays distinct from running, completed, or failed status. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines say, “Generally, ask for confirmation before performing a significant action on someone’s behalf.” Unity’s Assistant documentation offers a concrete software example: it prompts for permission before changes are applied, and assets are created or modified only after approval.

That evidence supports the order of operations—explain, ask, then act if authorized—not one mandatory card design or exact wording. Unity’s Assistant permissions documentation describes the approval-before-change flow; Apple’s generative AI design guidance covers confirmation for significant actions.

You’re not buying a finished product—you’re bringing home a character that keeps evolving.
  • 5. A Mind of His Own: Personality & Autonomy ✨ LOOI isn’t designed to obey every command—he’s designed to understand and respond. With TangibleFuture’s autonomous behavior system, LOOI combines environmental understanding with large-model reasoning to make spontaneous decisions and express them through animation and movement. His behavior isn’t fully predictable. He has his own ideas, which makes him feel truly alive.

Make the decision legible in the island itself. Identify what the assistant wants to do, offer a clear approve or decline route, and avoid treating dismissal as approval. If an action is underway only after approval, change the state so the person can tell that the decision has been made and work has begun.

Use the mascot for warmth, not as a status indicator

A mascot can make a compact assistant feel more approachable or help orient someone to the interface. It should not be the only indication that the microphone is active, approval is needed, an error occurred, or a task finished. Pair meaningful visual changes with concise text and accessibility semantics; do not rely on facial expression, pose, animation, or color to carry the state by itself.

W3C’s G193 technique notes that an avatar may help some people with cognitive disabilities. It is an example technique, not a requirement to use an avatar and not evidence that a specific mascot improves outcomes. W3C’s G193 technique provides that limited context.

Make the 14px wake strip communicate—and expand when needed

The 14px dimension is an input to your design, not a validated accessibility size. A very narrow strip can be a low-distraction cue, but it may not have room for clear text, a usable control, or a status that remains understandable at different display scales. Let it expand or open into a larger surface when a conversation, approval, or error needs more explanation or interaction.

Use explicit wording or another accessible equivalent for state changes. Check contrast, keyboard and focus behavior, scaling, and the accessibility APIs supported by the desktop framework you target. WCAG’s status-message guidance concerns content exposed through markup; a native desktop app needs the corresponding platform accessibility API and implementation review rather than a web-only assumption.

W3C’s explanation of status messages addresses exposing updates to assistive technology without moving focus. The UK Home Office design manual recommends polite announcements, enough time to read transient messages, consistent placement, alternatives to color-only meaning, and non-intrusive presentation. The Home Office notification guidance is a useful reference for those choices.

Keep routine updates quiet and decisions noticeable

Routine progress should not repeatedly seize focus. Announce relevant status changes politely to assistive technology, but avoid flooding someone with updates. Keep notification placement consistent and leave transient messages visible long enough to read. Reserve stronger interruption for conditions that genuinely need immediate attention; an approval request deserves enough prominence to be noticed, but it should still state what decision is required.

Evaluate the design by the decisions it supports

Review each state and interaction against the same practical questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • State clarity: Can a person distinguish wake-word listening, an active conversation, and a pending approval?
  • User control: Can they stop an active interaction, dismiss the surface, and decide before a significant change?
  • Accessibility: Are status, meaning, and controls available without relying only on color, animation, or the mascot? Can relevant updates be announced without taking focus?
  • Attention cost: Does the island stay unobtrusive during routine updates while making decisions clear enough to act on?
  • Platform fit: Are microphone indicators and accessibility behaviors implemented using the actual operating system and desktop framework, rather than assumed from another platform?

Vibe Halo is a current example of the interaction category: its public repository describes a desktop Dynamic Island for AI coding clients, including an approval queue, questions, and completion notifications. At access, it labeled Windows stable and macOS/Linux preview. That is a product’s own platform and feature description, not independent evidence that its implementation is effective or a reason to copy it. The Vibe Halo repository documents its stated scope and platform caveats.

No comparative measurement in the cited guidance establishes that a 14px strip, a particular animation, or a mascot is optimal for this product. Treat those choices as hypotheses to validate with the intended users and desktop platform.
