A reconfigurable analog front end (AFE) lets one hardware design serve multiple supported sensor types or signal modes by switching paths or changing settings such as gain and filter bandwidth. It can reduce the need for separate signal chains, but it cannot make one circuit suitable for every sensor: input range, common-mode voltage, noise, bandwidth, protection, and other electrical requirements still set the limits.
What makes an analog front end reconfigurable?
An AFE conditions a sensor’s analog signal before conversion or further processing. Depending on the design, that can involve amplification, filtering, sensor excitation, input switching, and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). “Reconfigurable” describes how those resources are reused; it does not describe one universal architecture.
There are three distinct levels of flexibility:
- Board-level switching: A control signal selects among physical input paths or sensor modes. The circuit still relies on components chosen for its defined set of inputs.
- Programmable integrated AFE: An IC changes settings such as gain, coupling, or filter corner to suit different signal conditions. Its flexibility remains bounded by the chip’s design.
- Field-programmable analog fabric: A field-programmable analog array (FPAA) provides configurable analog blocks and routing, sometimes alongside digital logic. This offers broader circuit-level flexibility, with its own area, routing, and programming trade-offs.
So “design once, reuse forever” is best understood as reusing some combination of amplifiers, switches, gain stages, filters, excitation sources, ADC paths, and control logic across a known set of modes. The design can serve multiple purposes without making every possible sensor electrically compatible.

CN0209 changes configuration with a serially controlled octal switch. The selected signal path feeds an AD7193 sigma-delta ADC. Other parts of the design support particular measurement needs: an RTD excitation source provides current for RTD measurement, while a temperature sensor supplies thermocouple cold-junction compensation. The circuit also includes isolation and external protection. The official circuit note describes the approach this way: “This circuit provides a software controllable switch to configure the modes along with a constant current source to excite the RTD.”
The note reports effective-resolution results from 1,000 samples. They apply to the specific CN0209 modes and ADC output data rates shown here, not to every setup or to AFEs generally.

| CN0209 input mode | Reported effective resolution | ADC output data rate |
|---|---|---|
| ±10 V input | 19.15 bits | 50 Hz |
| 4–20 mA current loop | 22.24 bits | 2.63 Hz |
| RTD | 20.29 bits | 2.63 Hz |
| Thermocouple | 19.23 bits | 2.63 Hz |
These are the CN0209 note’s stated effective-resolution results; they are not a like-for-like comparison at a single output data rate. Resolution alone also does not establish accuracy or suitability for a different sensor.
What it takes to evaluate the industrial design
The CN0209 demonstration is a specialist evaluation setup rather than a stand-alone plug-in module. The vendor specifies an EVAL-CN0209-SDPZ circuit board connected to a separate EVAL-SDP-CB1Z System Demonstration Platform, along with a PC, CN0209 evaluation software, +15 V and −15 V supplies, and sensor inputs. The CN0209 evaluation instructions describe the required equipment and connections.

- Core circuit adopts classic NE555 timer IC configured as an oscillator; Resistors R2-R9 cooperate with R1 & C2 capacitor to generate 9 different oscillation frequencies; Each key(S1-S8) switches corresponding resistance value to change audio frequency, finally output different tones via built-in speaker, helping users intuitively learn oscillator & resistance-frequency correlation principle.
- All electronic accessories are supplied as loose separate components including PCB, NE555 IC, push buttons, resistors, capacitors and speaker; Users need to complete full soldering assembly by hand, ideal soldering training kit for electronics newbies, and electronic enthusiasts.
- Detailed soldering reminder included to avoid common mistakes: Distinguish 1K & 10K resistors; Electrolytic capacitor long pin = positive(+); Align NE555 chip notch with PCB mark; Red wire for speaker positive & black wire for negative; PCB VCC=Positive, GND=Negative for power wiring.
- Perfect STEM educational accessory for school physics & electronic class, laboratory experiment, maker club project and after-school handmade activity; Fun piano playing function combines theory with practice, greatly improving interest in analog circuit learning.
That setup matters when estimating the practical work involved in reuse: a mode may require suitable sensor wiring, configuration, supplies, and calibration—not just a software toggle. The reference design demonstrates a defined set of supported measurements, not automatic compatibility with arbitrary process sensors.
How biomedical AFEs reuse a signal chain
Biomedical examples show a different reuse pattern: programmable settings can adapt an integrated signal chain to different signal conditions or frequency bands. Their reported figures are not directly comparable to CN0209 because the applications, bandwidths, implementations, and measurement conditions differ.

ECG: programmable filtering in a proposed design
A 2023 Microelectronics Journal paper proposes an ECG acquisition AFE using a capacitor-coupled instrumentation amplifier, independent biasing, AC coupling, and a programmable low-pass filter. For its 0.13 μm CMOS design, the authors report post-simulation results: 48 μW whole-AFE power, 0.6 μV integrated noise, and selectable low-pass corners of 380 Hz, 451 Hz, and 1 kHz. These are simulation results, not measurements from fabricated silicon. The paper’s abstract and publication record describe the proposed design.
Neural recording: separate LFP and action-potential bands
A fabricated neural AFE reported in IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Circuits and Systems in 2024 supports local-field-potential (LFP) and action-potential (AP) modes with tunable gain and filters. In the authors’ reported measurements, the LFP band is 0.5 Hz–200 Hz and the AP band is 300 Hz–5 kHz. The same design reports gains of 39.6 dB and 59.5 dB, input-referred noise of 2.2 μVrms and 6.3 μVrms, respectively, and 6.3 μW per-channel AFE power. Its die measures 1.4 mm × 0.25 mm. These results belong to that particular fabricated design and reported test setup, not to neural AFEs as a class. The IEEE paper record identifies the design and its reported results.

Bandwidth and power scaling: a simulation example
A July 2026 Microelectronics Journal abstract describes a 180 nm CMOS bio-potential AFE whose clock frequency reconfigures bandwidth and power. It reports simulated bandwidth from 0.62 to 48.4 kHz and simulated power from 1.2 to 79 μW. The paper’s “75×” scalability claim is based on simulation; it is not evidence of measured production-device behavior. The abstract sets out those simulated results.

An FPAA goes beyond selecting among a fixed board’s sensor paths or adjusting a few AFE settings. The mixed-mode system-on-chip described by George and colleagues in a 2016 IEEE Transactions on Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) Systems paper combines configurable analog blocks, digital logic blocks, routing, programming infrastructure, and an MSP430-class microprocessor. The authors describe a fabricated 350 nm CMOS device and demonstrate compiled analog and digital circuits.
One demonstration is an audio command-word classifier with reported system power of 23 μW. That figure belongs to this experimentally demonstrated application; it is not a general AFE power benchmark. The paper also discusses architecture-specific trade-offs in area, density, routing, and programming. George et al.’s paper gives the system details and the context for its reported comparison.

How to judge whether an AFE can be reused for your sensors
Start with the actual sensors and operating modes, then check the limits of the complete input-to-conversion path. A programmable gain setting cannot compensate for an input voltage outside the circuit’s allowable range, and changing a filter does not resolve an incompatible source impedance or inadequate protection.
- Input compatibility: Check sensor type, voltage or current range, common-mode range, source impedance, and required excitation.
- Signal quality: Compare noise and resolution at the bandwidth and data rate you need. Note whether results are simulated or measured, and whether the stated power includes the ADC, control logic, and sensor excitation.
- Mode flexibility: Identify which gains, coupling modes, filter corners, and paths can change, and how quickly and finely the design can switch between them.
- Safety and stability: Review input protection, isolation, calibration requirements, and drift for each sensor mode.
- Implementation effort: Account for configuration or programming tools, evaluation hardware, power supplies, sensor fixtures, external components, and calibration procedures.
- Reuse scope: Decide whether a fixed-function IC with programmable settings, a modular reference board, or a broader FPAA fabric matches the product’s requirements. More flexibility may bring additional routing, area, or programming considerations.
The cited industrial, biomedical, and FPAA designs target different sensors, bandwidths, and implementation approaches, so their numbers do not establish a universal winner. A sound choice depends on whether the supported electrical envelope covers every intended sensor mode with adequate signal quality and acceptable implementation effort.
