St Mary’s In The Wood United Reformed Church in Morley, Leeds, has sold at auction for a reported £100,000, according to BBC News. The buyer’s identity and plans for the Grade II listed, fire-damaged building have not been disclosed.
Which church sold, and for how much?
The property is St Mary’s In The Wood United Reformed Church on Commercial Street in Morley, Leeds. Auctioneer BTG Eddisons confirmed the sale. BBC News reported the price as £100,000; it did not say whether the buyer was a private individual or a commercial purchaser.
Why is it known as the ‘church in the woods’?
The church sits in a wooded setting. Built in 1878 in the Gothic Revival style, it is a Grade II listed building. It had not been used for worship since 2008 and fell into disrepair after extensive fire damage in 2010.
What redevelopment proposals were made?
Earlier proposals did not become the outcome of this sale, and no new owner’s plans were reported.

- A later proposal to convert the fire-damaged church into 18 apartments also did not come to fruition. The figure describes a proposed conversion, not completed homes.
Leeds City Council’s 2023 purchase of a nearby former Sunday School is a separate project. That building, constructed in 1900, was bought for use as a “learning and skills centre”; it is not the church that sold.
What is known about the buyer’s plans?
The sale report does not name the buyer or identify any plans for the property. It is therefore not established whether the church will be restored, redeveloped or used for another purpose.
