Derail is a Core multiplayer map in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. It is a snowy forest built around a railway town, with a trainwreck and scattered railcars at its center. Call of Duty’s official guides describe a map that splits into two kinds of fight: long-range woodland on either flank and close-quarters ground in the wreckage and the northern interiors. The practical question on Derail is less where the single best spot is and more which fight you want to take and which route gets you there.
The advice below comes from Call of Duty’s official Derail map guide and its Modern Warfare III multiplayer training page. Where it is a publisher recommendation, it is labeled that way. None of it reflects independent playtesting.

What the map looks like
The official Modern Warfare III multiplayer training guide lists Derail as a Core multiplayer map. In team-based modes, the official Derail map guide places the main spawns at Train Platforms in the north and Street in the south. It divides the map into seven callout areas, listed below with the role the guide gives each one.

Engagement distance: where fights happen
Derail produces three distinct kinds of engagement. Knowing which one you are entering tells you what loadout and posture to bring.

North and South Woods: long-range ground
The official guide’s clearest line on the map is this: “The wide-open woodlands on either side of the map present ample sniping opportunities.” This is publisher-authored guide copy, not a quotation from a named person. The guide adds that South Woods has sightlines toward the railway town, and that rough terrain and reduced tree cover affect how players move through it. It also encourages players to learn which forest routes are safer across repeated matches, rather than relying on one route.
Train Crash: cover and ambush
The wreck is where the guide expects engagement distance to shrink. Accessible railcars, the tracks, and the bridge all serve as potential cover and ambush positions, and moving through the wreckage tends to pull the fight into closer ranges. The guide notes that the lower crash area gives some protection from woodland snipers, which makes close-quarters fighting more likely there than in the trees.

Warehouse and Office: close quarters on a large map
The guide calls out the northern interiors specifically. Even on a map this large, the Warehouse and Office are places where close-quarters combat can decide an engagement. Players who push these buildings should expect the fight to start at short range, not at the long sightlines the woods offer.
Choosing between a direct push and a flank
The guide’s central routing advice is to weigh a direct push against a longer or less exposed approach. On Derail, the Creek is the main example of the second option. Its lowered elevation gives a route toward the next objective when woodland sightlines make a direct approach risky, and the guide says it can move players toward the Warehouse with less exposure to the trees.

Before committing to a line, the guide’s logic suggests checking three things:
- Whether the direct approach crosses open ground that a long-range player in the woods can cover.
- Whether the alternate route passes through the Train Crash, where the fight is likely to turn close-range.
- Whether your team’s loadouts suit the range you expect at the point you commit.
Mode-specific advice
Domination
The guide says the flags emphasize the east side of the map and calls the fight for B paramount. When approaching B, it recommends using cover near the railcars. It also describes the Water Tower and the far-west cabin as long-range views over B, with rooftop ladder access near A and the Office as the vantage point for C.

Cutthroat
The guide describes the open forest as space to spread out, and the interiors and wreckage as closer-combat areas. It advises keeping the overtime flag in view and deciding whether to stay grouped or spread out based on how the opposing team is approaching.

The official page introduces this mode as a high-risk crossing through the woods. The guide does not establish detailed site-by-site tactics for it. Treat any specific route for this mode as something to verify by playing and inspecting the map directly, rather than as established guidance.

These are suggestions from Call of Duty’s Derail guide, not proven best-in-slot choices:
- Hybrid optics let you switch between long-range woodland fights and close-range interiors and wreckage without changing attachments.
- A launcher is suggested as a counter to enemy aerial streaks.
How to use these notes in a match
- Confirm which spawn you are on, north at Train Platforms or south at Street, and note which of the seven callout areas sits between you and the objective.
- Decide whether that path runs through open woodland or the wreck, and set your loadout and positioning for that range.
- If the direct line runs through woodland sightlines, check whether the Creek offers a less exposed approach before committing.
- In Domination, plan your approach to B with cover near the railcars. In Cutthroat, keep the overtime flag in view as you decide whether to spread out.
What the official sources do not establish
Call of Duty’s official Derail guide and training page describe the map’s layout and tactical character. They do not establish the current matchmaking rotation, playlist availability, or whether Derail is in the latest game update. Do not assume Derail appears in a particular playlist without checking a current official Call of Duty source.
