A deposit receipt token is a digital token that represents or evidences a claim associated with assets deposited or escrowed with a protocol or provider. It is a functional label, not a guarantee of immediate redemption, a fixed exchange rate, free transferability, yield, or a particular legal right. Those details depend on the specific token, its underlying asset, and its terms.
How a deposit receipt token works
A user deposits an asset with a protocol or provider and receives a token associated with that deposit. Depending on the design, the token may record a position, serve as part of a withdrawal process, or be usable in other applications. The token’s documentation and legal terms determine what the holder can actually do; the name alone does not.
a16z crypto described deposit receipt tokens as tokens that “represent deposited or escrowed assets” in a March 13, 2025 comment to the SEC, placing them within the broader category of asset-backed tokens. That description captures the function, not a universal technical or legal standard: a16z crypto’s SEC comment.

A receipt token may evidence a deposit-related claim, but that does not by itself establish that the holder legally owns the underlying asset, has direct custody of it, or can demand repayment from a particular party. The relevant rights depend on the token’s governing terms, the asset, and who controls the deposited funds.

For one specific example, Dyson documents its dysontokens as proof-of-deposit receipts that can be used to withdraw assets from Dyson vaults. Dyson says its tokens are transferable but not tradable, unique to each vault, and yield-bearing through compounding and yield farming. Those are Dyson-specific mechanics, not standard features of deposit receipt tokens generally: Dyson’s dysontokens documentation.
Can you redeem a deposit receipt token?
Possibly, but the label does not guarantee immediate or one-to-one redemption. A protocol may impose withdrawal steps, limits, delays, fees, or other conditions; some tokens may instead record a position or serve a different function. Check the current documentation and terms for the exact asset and withdrawal route before treating a receipt token as equivalent to the deposited asset.

When evaluating a token, verify:
- What it represents: the particular asset or position associated with the deposit.
- Who controls the assets: the provider, custodian, protocol, or another party, and what role each has.
- How withdrawal works: what the holder can claim, the steps and conditions, and any limits, delays, or fees.
- How the token can be used: whether it can be transferred, traded, or used in other protocols.
- How any yield is produced: whether yield exists, how it is generated, and what fees or risks apply.
Is a deposit receipt token a security?
There is no categorical answer based on the name alone. In a 2026 release, the SEC describes a staking receipt token as an instrument certifying that a stated amount of a digital commodity was deposited with the issuing liquid staking provider, and says it evidences the holder’s ownership of that deposited commodity. The release’s securities discussion depends on its stated facts: it distinguishes a receipt for a non-security crypto asset not subject to an investment contract from one for a digital security or an asset subject to an investment contract. It should not be read as a blanket classification of all deposit or receipt tokens: SEC 2026 release.
Treasury’s August 18, 2026 proposed stablecoin rule asks how a deposit receipt or other tokenized claim referencing a payment stablecoin should be treated. Among the questions it raises is whether the analysis should consider rights to use, transfer, redeem, convert, or obtain the underlying payment stablecoin or reserve value. This is a question posed in a proposal for comment, not a settled legal answer: Treasury’s proposed rule.

What to check before relying on one
Read the specific token’s documentation and applicable terms rather than inferring rights from its name. Focus on the represented asset, custody and control, withdrawal conditions, transfer restrictions, use in other protocols, and any yield or fees. These details—not the phrase “deposit receipt token”—determine what the token does and what claims its holder may have.
