The Dell XPS 17 9700 remains compelling if your priorities are a large, bright 16:10 display, premium build, and strong everyday performance. Its main drawbacks are weight, a middling webcam, and dated components: this is a 2020 laptop, so current alternatives may offer more graphics performance for the money. Choose the FHD+ version for better efficiency or UHD+ for finer detail and a wider color gamut.
What the XPS 17 9700 does well—and where it falls short
Dell’s 2020 XPS 17 brought a 17-inch screen into a relatively restrained design with thin bezels. In its July 2, 2020 verdict, Tom’s Hardware praised its performance and gaming-grade GPU, while calling out the webcam as a weakness. A later review by Tech Advisor, published March 12, 2021, highlighted the display, sturdy design, keyboard, and battery life, but noted the machine’s older components, weight, missing features, and high price.
- Best reasons to consider it: a large 16:10 screen, premium construction, capable performance for many everyday workloads, and a comfortable keyboard.
- Reasons to look elsewhere: portability, webcam quality, latest-generation gaming performance, or the strongest value for your budget.
Those reviews describe a laptop that was excellent in its generation, not a current performance leader. Whether it makes sense now depends heavily on its condition, configuration, and price; a current market price was not established here.

Which display should you choose?
Dell’s XPS 17 9700 specifications list two 17-inch, wide-viewing-angle options. Both are rated for 500 nits typical brightness, but their resolution and color coverage differ.
| Display | Resolution | Specified color coverage | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| FHD+ | 1920 × 1200 | 100% sRGB | Everyday use and buyers prioritizing efficiency over maximum pixel density. |
| UHD+ | 3840 × 2400 | 100% AdobeRGB | Sharper detail and color-sensitive creative work. |
Tech Advisor measured 531 nits peak brightness, a 2,042:1 contrast ratio, and average Delta E of 1.82 on the review unit. It also reported more than 99% sRGB and Adobe RGB coverage and 89.7% DCI-P3 coverage. These are measurements for one tested configuration, not guaranteed results for every XPS 17 9700 panel. Dell’s listed 500-nit figure is the typical specification, not that review’s peak measurement.
How long does the battery last?
There is no single runtime that applies to every workload. Brightness, configuration, and whether the laptop is doing light work or demanding CPU- and GPU-intensive tasks can change battery life substantially. Historical review tests illustrate that range:
Rank #2
- Desktop-caliber creativity in a laptop:Packed with staggering performance typically only available from desktops, 10th Gen Intel Core processors bring desktop-caliber creativity to your laptop
- More creating, less waiting:GeForce RTX 2060 laptops are built with the breakthrough graphics performance of the award-winning GeForce GPUs. Dedicated GPU power accelerates the creative apps you use every day
- The XPS 17 delivers unprecedented performance in an incredibly thin form factor. discrete graphics feature unique dual opposite outlet fans, that increase fan airflow by approximately 30%
- Model number: XPS9700-9415SLV-PUS
| Source and test | Reported runtime |
|---|---|
| Tech Advisor, HD-video loop | 11.5 hours |
| Tech Advisor, light-work test | 9 hours 44 minutes |
| Tech Advisor, tougher work benchmark | Just under three hours |
| Tech Advisor, intensive CPU and GPU use | About two hours |
| TechRadar, 1080p video loop at 50% brightness | 12 hours 43 minutes |
These are test-specific historical results, not a promise of runtime on a used laptop or under your own workload. Expect demanding creative work or gaming to drain it far faster than video playback or light tasks.

Performance, ports, and day-to-day use
The 9700 can handle many everyday workloads, and configurations with a discrete GPU extend its usefulness for creative applications and gaming. That does not make it a strong value for demanding modern games: newer laptops can provide more graphics performance at the same price. Check the exact CPU and GPU in the individual machine you are considering rather than assuming every XPS 17 9700 has the same capabilities.

Dell’s setup and specifications guide documents USB Type-C charging and the model’s power-adapter specifications. Port selection and the specific adapter supplied can matter when planning a desk setup or replacing a missing charger; consult the guide for the precise configuration and adapter details instead of assuming a generic USB-C charger is suitable.
The reviews’ shared practical caution is portability. A 17-inch screen is useful when you want room to work, but Tech Advisor counted the heavier weight among the system’s disadvantages. The webcam is another compromise: Tom’s Hardware specifically described its quality as middling, so frequent video callers may prefer a newer laptop with a better camera.

Buying a used or refurbished XPS 17 9700
This model is old enough that configuration and condition matter as much as its original feature set. Before buying, verify the listing and the actual device rather than relying on a family-level description.

- Check CPU and GPU: discrete graphics can help with creative work and games, but do not assume it matches current gaming laptops.
- Inspect battery condition: historical review runtimes cannot establish the remaining capacity of a particular used unit.
- Check the included power adapter: verify that it is present and appropriate for the configuration. Dell documents USB-C charging and adapter specifications in its support guide.
- Assess the webcam and carrying weight: these are meaningful trade-offs if you travel often or rely on video meetings.
- Compare the total price with newer alternatives: no current price or refurbished inventory is established here, so value must be judged against the specific offer.
Should you buy the Dell XPS 17 9700?
Consider it if a large, high-quality display and premium build matter more than carrying weight, webcam quality, or having the latest graphics performance. The FHD+ panel is the sensible direction for efficiency; the UHD+ panel is better suited to buyers who value high resolution and AdobeRGB coverage. If the listing is expensive, the battery is worn, or gaming performance is central, compare newer machines before committing.
