If your Dell Vostro 260s will not turn on, first check the outlet, power cable, and any power strip before replacing parts. The power-light pattern can narrow the problem: off means the computer is off or not receiving power; steady amber points to a system-board or power-supply problem; blinking amber points to a startup (POST) or processor problem. Dell specifies a 250 W power supply for this model, but wattage alone does not establish that a replacement will fit or connect correctly.
Start with the outlet and power cable
When the power light is off, Dell says the computer is either turned off or not receiving power. That does not identify a failed component, so rule out the external power path before opening the case.
- Turn the computer off, then reseat its power cable at both the computer and the wall outlet.
- Connect the computer directly to a known-working wall outlet, bypassing any power strip, surge protector, or extension cable.
- Test the outlet with another device, such as a lamp.
These are Dell’s first checks for an off power light in the Vostro 260s owner manual. If the light remains off after these checks, the available symptom alone does not prove whether the fault is the power supply, system board, or another part of the power path.
Use the power light to narrow the fault
| Power-light pattern | What Dell indicates | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Off | The computer is off or not receiving power. | Reseat the cable, bypass power accessories, and test the outlet. |
| Steady amber | A system-board or power-supply problem; the owner manual also describes standby or a computer-fault condition. | After basic power checks, use Dell’s model-specific power and PSU troubleshooting guidance. |
| Blinking amber | A failure to complete POST or a processor problem. Dell’s setup sheet also associates blinking amber with a system-board problem. | Check cards, any installed graphics card, and motherboard and processor power cables if you are qualified to work inside the computer. |
Dell’s setup sheet describes steady amber as a system-board or power-supply problem and blinking amber as a system-board problem. The owner manual gives further troubleshooting context for amber lights and startup faults. Neither pattern, by itself, confirms which component has failed.

If the light blinks amber
Dell’s documented checks include removing and reinstalling cards, reinstalling the graphics card if one is present, and verifying the motherboard and processor power cables. Opening the case and handling cards or internal power connectors carries a risk of damage and electrical injury if done improperly. Disconnect power first; if you are unsure how to work safely inside a desktop, stop and use a qualified technician.
When a Vostro 260s PSU replacement makes sense
Dell’s 2011 specification for the Vostro 260S lists a 250 W power supply, with input of 100–127 VAC or 200–240 VAC at 50–60 Hz. Those figures describe the model specification, not proof that any 250 W unit is a compatible replacement. For a confirmed PSU failure, look for a model-compatible slim-tower unit and check all of the following before ordering:

- Connector types and arrangement match the original unit and the computer’s board and drives.
- The PSU’s physical dimensions and mounting points fit the slim-tower case.
- Its input-voltage range is suitable for your electrical supply.
- The seller provides a workable return policy in case the unit does not fit or connect.
Dell’s specification establishes the rated wattage and input range, but does not certify a particular current marketplace listing. Confirm compatibility with the seller or a qualified repairer rather than relying on wattage alone.
When to replace the CR2032 battery instead
The Vostro 260S specification identifies a 3 V CR2032 lithium coin cell as its RTC battery. Replacing this battery is relevant when symptoms point to loss of real-time clock or CMOS settings, such as the clock repeatedly losing time. It is not a general fix for a computer with no lights and no response: a coin-cell replacement does not establish or repair a failed PSU.

| Option | Symptoms it matches | Compatibility to verify | Practical considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250 W slim-tower PSU | Suspected or confirmed power-supply fault, including a steady-amber condition. | Connectors, dimensions, mounting, input-voltage range, and fit for the Vostro 260S. | Internal replacement has greater installation risk; confirm the seller’s return terms. |
| 3 V CR2032 coin cell | RTC/CMOS symptoms such as clock loss. | Battery type and polarity when installed. | It is not a remedy for a no-power symptom without evidence of an RTC/CMOS issue. |
Get model-specific help if the checks do not resolve it
Dell’s Vostro 260s support hub links to model-specific guidance for no power/no POST, desktop power, PSU troubleshooting, and PSU self-test. Follow the relevant procedure after checking the outlet and cable. If diagnosis points to the system board or requires board-level repair, use qualified service rather than guessing at replacement parts.
The documented light patterns identify possible fault areas, not a definitive failed part. Without the exact observed symptoms and test results, it is not possible to responsibly name the component that needs replacement or assign a failure percentage.
