To right-click on most Dell laptops, tap the touchpad once with two fingers at the same time. If your touchpad supports it, you can also press its lower-right corner. If neither method works, check the touchpad’s tap settings in Windows.
Right-click with a two-finger tap
- Place two fingers together on the touchpad.
- Tap once. The context menu should open at the pointer.
Dell Support describes two-finger tapping as a right-click method in its touchpad FAQ. It is the best method to try first because it does not depend on a dedicated physical right-click area.
Use the lower-right corner if your touchpad supports it
Press the lower-right corner of the touchpad. Some Dell touchpads register this as a right-click, but hardware layouts vary by model. For example, Dell’s G3 3590 setup guide describes a two-finger tap and identifies a separate right-click area. Do not assume every Dell laptop has the same physical layout.

- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
- Expand Taps.
- Enable the option for tapping with two fingers to right-click.
These are the settings steps in Dell’s current general guidance; Windows labels or menu paths may change in later versions.

Stop accidental right-clicks on certain XPS models
Dell documents unintended corner right-clicks caused by palm contact on the XPS 14 9440 and XPS 16 9640 specifically. To prevent them, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad > Taps and clear Press the lower right corner of the touchpad to right-click. Two-finger tap remains available. If right-click still does not work
- Try both methods: the two-finger tap and, if supported, the lower-right-corner press.
- Confirm the two-finger right-click tap is enabled under Touchpad > Taps.
- If the entire touchpad is unresponsive, connect a USB or wireless mouse as a troubleshooting aid. Dell notes that an external mouse can help determine whether the problem is specific to the touchpad.
