The Dell Inspiron Zino HD is a small, older desktop whose capabilities depend heavily on its exact configuration. The documented Inspiron 400 platform offered AMD Athlon processors, up to 8 GB of DDR2 memory, and either integrated or discrete graphics; the later 2010 refresh used different components. Its compact dimensions and legacy connections are clear from Dell’s specifications, but historical documentation does not establish how well any individual unit performs today.
What the Zino HD review can—and cannot—establish
Dell’s September 2009 specifications describe the Inspiron 400, while contemporary Microsoft posts document example configurations from the original launch period and a 2010 refresh. Dell’s support page lists the manuals and service documentation, but that is not evidence of current parts availability. These sources establish what the computer was offered with, not present-day performance, condition, or value. Dell’s specifications and the Dell support page are useful references when identifying a unit.
No benchmark, noise or thermal test, reliability statistic, current software-support assessment, streaming-service compatibility test, or used-market survey is established by these sources. Accordingly, this is a configuration and specification review, not a hands-on verdict about a particular machine.

The Zino HD name covers different hardware. For the original period, Microsoft’s November 2009 post described Athlon single- or dual-core processor choices, memory configurations up to 8 GB, 500 GB to 1 TB 7200 rpm SATA storage, DVD or Blu-ray options, and integrated HD 3200 or discrete HD 4330 graphics. These were period options, not a promise that every region or individual system had them.

Microsoft’s September 2010 post described a refresh. It gave an example configuration with an AMD Athlon II V140, 2 GB RAM, a 250 GB drive, DVD drive/burner, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 graphics. It also described a promotional higher-end configuration with a Phenom II X4 P940, 6 GB RAM, a 750 GB drive, Blu-ray, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5450 MXM discrete graphics. These are examples from that dated article, not universal specifications.
| Period description | Example hardware reported | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Original configuration, 2009 | Athlon single- or dual-core choices; 500 GB to 1 TB 7200 rpm SATA storage; DVD or Blu-ray; integrated HD 3200 or discrete HD 4330 graphics. | Options described in Microsoft’s November 13, 2009 post; not a guarantee of availability in every market or shipped unit. |
| 2010 refresh, referenced configuration | Athlon II V140, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB drive, DVD drive/burner, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250. | Example configuration in Microsoft’s September 23, 2010 post. |
| 2010 refresh, promotional higher-end configuration | Phenom II X4 P940, 6 GB RAM, 750 GB drive, Blu-ray, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5450 MXM discrete graphics. | A dated promotional configuration in the same 2010 post, not a universal configuration or a current price reference. |
When evaluating a specific unit, identify its processor, graphics, memory, drive, optical drive, wireless card, and installed operating system rather than inferring them from the model name. Dell notes that regional offerings may vary; the exact model and installed components matter.

Size, connections, and expansion
Compact enclosure
Dell specifies the Inspiron 400 chassis at 197.6 mm high by 197.6 mm wide by 89 mm deep, with a weight of 2.0 kg without the AC adapter. Those are manufacturer-published figures, not independent measurements. The specified adapter is 65 W; Dell notes that the 75 W adapter ships with the discrete graphics card.

Ports and networking
The Inspiron 400 specification lists two front and two rear USB 2.0 ports, VGA, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, two eSATA connectors, headphone, microphone and line-out connectors, plus a 4-in-1 memory-card reader. It does not establish USB 3.x support. Confirm the ports on the actual system, especially if a particular connection is essential.

Memory and internal storage
Dell documents two memory connectors for 800 MHz DDR2 SODIMM non-ECC memory and supported configurations up to 8 GB. That maximum is for the documented Inspiron 400 specification; check the machine’s generation and installed modules before buying memory.
The documented internal storage bay is one internally accessible 3.5-inch SATA hard-drive bay. The specification does not establish that a different drive size or mounting arrangement will fit. Dell also lists an external 12.7 mm tray-load SATA DVD+/-RW Super Multi Drive or Blu-ray combo drive.

Processor and graphics: why the exact parts matter
Dell’s Inspiron 400 specification identifies AMD Athlon and AMD Athlon X2 processor families, an AMD 780G chipset, and a 200 MHz external bus frequency. Contemporary posts add the specific 2009 and 2010 examples above. A model label alone is not enough to determine which processor is in a particular Zino.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Graphics differ by generation and configuration. Dell lists integrated ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3200 graphics with up to 256 MB UMA memory, or an optional ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 with 512 MB DDR3 for the documented Inspiron 400. The 2010 post separately describes HD 4250 and HD 5450 configurations. Microsoft’s 2009 recommendation of the discrete card was tied to its period Windows Media Center use case; it does not demonstrate modern playback performance or compatibility with current video services.

Historical prices are not current value estimates
Microsoft’s 2009 post stated a $229 starting price, and its 2010 refresh post stated a $299 starting price. Both are historical launch-era figures, not current used prices or evidence of what a particular configuration is worth today. Assess any secondhand offer using the unit’s exact specifications and tested condition, included adapter and accessories, seller return terms, and current comparable listings.
Quick Recap
Practical checks before buying or upgrading
- Identify the generation and installed components. Check the processor, graphics, memory, storage, optical drive, wireless card, and operating system on the actual unit; do not assume the 2009 and 2010 configurations share specifications.
- Verify the intended upgrade against the documented platform. For memory, check that modules are 800 MHz DDR2 SODIMMs, non-ECC, and that the resulting configuration stays within Dell’s documented 8 GB maximum. For internal storage, the documented bay is for one 3.5-inch SATA hard drive.
- Inspect the physical system and accessories. Confirm that the ports and optical drive work as needed and that the correct AC adapter is included. Dell specifies a 65 W adapter generally and notes a 75 W adapter with the discrete graphics card.
- Test the machine for your intended use before relying on it. Historical specifications cannot establish current browser, operating-system, streaming, noise, temperature, or reliability behavior. A live test of the individual unit is necessary for those questions.
