If a Dell Inspiron 1545 turns G into GT5, H into HY6, or produces similar combinations, the built-in keyboard or its ribbon-cable connection is the most likely problem. A USB keyboard that works normally strongly supports that diagnosis. Press F12 at startup and run the keyboard test before changing Windows settings.
What the symptom means
This is different from a key that simply fails or a keyboard layout that substitutes one character for another. Reported examples include GT5, HY6, and YH6 from individual letter keys, while a USB keyboard types normally on the same laptop. Related letters and numbers point to a keyboard-matrix or membrane fault, contamination, liquid damage, or a poor ribbon connection. The exact failed component cannot be confirmed until the keyboard is tested outside Windows.

Try Num Lock once
- Press the laptop’s Num Lock key, or the Fn-plus-Num-Lock combination if that is how your unit toggles it.
- Open Notepad and test the affected keys.
- If the output is still compound text such as
GT5orHY6, Num Lock is not a sufficient explanation.
Older laptops can map some letter keys to an embedded number pad, but Num Lock normally changes selected letters into numbers; it does not usually make one press emit several letters and a number. Do not repeatedly change language or regional layouts when the USB keyboard is already correct. A layout problem would generally affect both keyboards.

When Windows remains a possibility
If the built-in keyboard works in preboot diagnostics but fails only after Windows starts, check the selected keyboard layout, accessibility options, remapping utilities, hotkey software, recently installed drivers, and other software that intercepts keystrokes. Malware is not established merely by incorrect characters; investigate it only if there are additional system symptoms.
Run Dell’s preboot keyboard test
- Shut the Inspiron 1545 down completely.
- Turn it on and repeatedly tap F12 when the Dell logo appears.
- Choose Diagnostics from the one-time boot menu. Wording can vary with firmware.
- Allow the basic checks to run, then select or continue to the keyboard test when offered.
- Press the keys that produce extra characters.

Use a USB keyboard while deciding
A USB keyboard is a safe immediate workaround. It keeps the computer usable, lets you back up files, and provides a useful comparison: normal USB input means Windows can process keyboard input correctly. It does not repair the built-in keyboard, and it uses a USB port, but it may be the most sensible option if repair labor exceeds the value of this old laptop.

Safety before opening the laptop
- Shut down, unplug the charger, and remove the main battery.
- Back up important files using the working USB keyboard.
- If liquid was spilled, stop powering the computer; corrosion may affect the keyboard and motherboard.
- Do not pour cleaner into the keyboard, strike it, or press hard on keycaps.
- Use the model-specific procedure for the Inspiron 1545 (also identified as PP41L); similar-looking Inspiron models are not automatically compatible.
Dell’s service procedure warns that the battery must be removed before servicing and that keycaps and connectors are fragile: Inspiron 1545 service documentation.

Reseat the keyboard ribbon cable
Reseating is worthwhile when the fault began after a drop, flexing, servicing, or moisture exposure. It can correct an intermittent connection, but it cannot repair a failed membrane or corroded board.
- Remove the center control cover as described in the service documentation.
- Remove the two screws at the top of the keyboard.
- Slide the keyboard out carefully; do not lever aggressively against the display.
- Turn it over and lift the ribbon-connector latch.
- Inspect the cable and contacts for dirt, corrosion, creases, or damage.
- Insert the cable squarely and press the latch down.
- Reassemble and repeat the F12 keyboard test.

Replace the Inspiron 1545 keyboard
If the keys fail in diagnostics and reseating does not help, replacing the keyboard assembly is the normal repair. The documented sequence is:
- Power off, unplug, and remove the battery.
- Remove the center control cover.
- Remove the two keyboard screws.
- Slide the keyboard out and release its latched ribbon cable.
- Connect the replacement keyboard.
- Slide its six lower tabs beneath the palm-rest edge.
- Reinstall the screws, center cover, and battery.
- Run the preboot keyboard test again.

Why a keycap-only repair may not work
A missing or broken cap can be replaced individually, but multiple related outputs usually indicate the membrane, matrix traces, flex cable, connector, or motherboard—not the cap itself. Dell’s procedure treats the keyboard as an assembly rather than a field-repairable membrane.
If a replacement keyboard has the same fault
Do not assume the new part is defective immediately. Check that it is the correct PP41L/1545 part and that the ribbon is fully square and latched. The remaining possibilities include a defective replacement, corrosion at the connector, liquid damage beyond the keyboard, or a damaged motherboard keyboard circuit. If the keyboard works in diagnostics but fails only in Windows, return to software and remapping checks. Choose the practical option

Avoid impact-based advice such as hitting, scrubbing, or repeatedly pressing the keyboard. An anecdotal temporary improvement is not a reliable repair and can damage the old plastic and key mechanisms.
