Dell’s 14 Premium and 16 Premium carried forward the design lineage and flagship positioning of its XPS laptops, but they were sold under the Premium name—not as XPS models. Dell described them as 2025-generation laptops with Intel Core Ultra 200H-series processors. In January 2026, Dell announced separate new XPS 14 and XPS 16 models, making the Premiums an intervening generation rather than the same products under a temporary label.
Why Dell called them Premium instead of XPS
Dell positioned the 14 Premium and 16 Premium as flagship laptops for students, creators, and entrepreneurs, while saying they stayed true to the XPS tradition. IT Pro called the 16 Premium a “spiritual successor to the Dell XPS 16,” and Windows Central also described the Premium models as successors to the earlier XPS 14 and XPS 16. Those descriptions refer to design heritage and market position: the Premium laptops were not literally XPS-branded machines. Dell’s Premium announcement and IT Pro’s review support that distinction.
The launch chronology needs a qualification. Dell’s launch page is dated March 5, 2026, but other coverage describes the Premium models as products from the preceding year by January 2026. The available dates do not reconcile, so the precise original announcement date is uncertain. Dell’s later XPS announcement is clearly dated January 6, 2026.

Dell also claimed up to 33% faster daily-work performance, up to 21% faster performance in lightweight 3D and creative apps, and up to 23% faster demanding multithreaded workflows. What one 16 Premium review configuration showed
IT Pro reviewed a 16 Premium with an Intel Core Ultra 7 255H, Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060, 32GB DDR5 memory, and a 1TB SSD. Its tested OLED panel was 16.3 inches, 120Hz, and 3,840 × 2,400. IT Pro measured 99.9% sRGB accuracy, 89.1% Adobe RGB coverage, 99.7% DCI-P3 coverage, and 353 nits brightness on that review unit. These are measurements of that configuration, not guarantees for every 16 Premium or the 14 Premium.

What the independent review found—and what it did not
IT Pro praised the reviewed 16 Premium’s performance, display quality, and build aesthetics. It also flagged a limited selection of physical ports, a keyboard and haptic touchpad it found fiddly, battery-life concerns, and a high price. Those drawbacks belong to the reviewed configuration and the reviewer’s experience; they do not establish a controlled comparison between the 14-inch and 16-inch models.

The evidence available here does not establish a like-for-like 14 Premium versus 16 Premium test, current pricing, stock, or regional availability. The 16-inch review can inform expectations about one configuration, but it cannot show that one size is universally better.

What replaced the XPS 14 and XPS 16?
On January 6, 2026, Dell announced that it was bringing back the XPS name with new XPS 14 and XPS 16 laptops. Those are separately announced products, not simply the Premium laptops renamed. In the later announcement, Dell vice chairman and chief operating officer Jeff Clarke said: “We’re getting back to our roots with a renewed focus on consumer and gaming. XPS is back, better than ever, with a complete redesign that delivers exceptional craftsmanship in our thinnest, lightest form factors yet.” The statement concerns Dell’s XPS relaunch, not the Premium launch. Dell’s January 2026 announcement provides the date and quotation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are the Dell Premium laptops basically XPS laptops?
They are XPS successors in the sense of lineage and positioning, but not in product name or identity. Dell used Premium branding for the 14.5-inch and 16.3-inch generation, then announced new XPS 14 and XPS 16 models separately. Buyers comparing them should check the exact generation and configuration: display, processor and graphics, memory, storage, ports, and price can vary, and the reviewed 16 Premium’s specifications should not be assumed for every system.
