Mayank Austen Soofi’s “Delhiwale: Door Sutra, Part 2,” published in Hindustan Times on October 2, 2026, turns attention from Old Delhi’s ornate haveli entrances to the more practical doors of newer neighbourhoods. Its two apartment-door portraits show how everyday fixtures and residents’ personal decorations can make an entrance feel distinctly its own.
From haveli entrances to practical apartment doors
Soofi’s feature begins with details that serve everyday needs: metal bars across a doorway, mosquito-proof mesh behind them, and a cloth bag hung on a handle for a delivery person. It sets these against the arches, niches, and built-in seating described at Old Delhi havelis. This is an editorial contrast, not a measured survey or a claim that old and new homes always look one way or the other.
The point is to notice newer-area doorways as well. Wooden panels, grilles, locks, mesh, and video doorbells appear as practical features in the article; residents’ added objects bring a more personal layer to the entrances it visits. Read the feature in Hindustan Times.

Payal’s apartment door sits beside a tower staircase. Its handle is decorated with tassels, pompoms, cowrie shells, and small bells, while signs mark the area as spiritual. A carved wooden jharokha adds another focal point: she bought it about fifteen years before the feature appeared, and it had once divided her living room into a temple and sitting area.
The doorway’s decorations connect to life inside the home, too. Soofi links the display with Payal’s husband playing the harmonium and her daughter singing. The entrance is not presented as a design formula; it is a glimpse of the household and the objects that have accumulated meaning there.
Ruchi’s doorway: welcoming words, flowers, and a playful jhalar
Across from Payal’s door, Ruchi’s entrance carries a “Happy Loving Caring Home” sign, an Om symbol, and a rose-decorated bandarwar made by her friend Aarti the previous Diwali. In the small corridor, a jhalar of flower-shaped strands and golden beads ends in bells.

That hanging also becomes part of a joke between friends: a visitor sometimes hides behind it and emerges singing a qawwali. The feature’s example shows how a doorway decoration can be both an ornament and part of a household’s shared routine; it does not establish how common such decorations are across Delhi.
What the feature asks readers to notice
- Function: grilles, locks, and mosquito mesh address practical concerns described in the newer-area setting.
- Personal expression: Payal’s bells and carved jharokha and Ruchi’s signs and floral hanging make their apartment entrances individual.
- Architectural contrast: the article names arches, niches, and built-in seating in its description of haveli entrances, without suggesting those features define every older home or are absent from newer ones.
These are observed doorways, not a representative count of Delhi housing or a guide to which features residents should choose.
