A recent Chuseok gathering at the Korean Cultural Centre India (KCCI) in New Delhi invited K-culture enthusiasts to try Hangeul calligraphy, traditional games, hanbok and songpyeon. The hands-on program offered a glimpse of Korean culture beyond the K-pop reference point, while visitors made their own comparisons with Indian festival customs, games and foods.

What Chuseok celebrates

Chuseok is Korea’s harvest festival, a major traditional holiday centered on family gatherings and gratitude to ancestors. Its date falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, so the Gregorian date changes each year. In 2026, Chuseok itself fell on Friday, September 25, within a public holiday period from September 24 to 26, according to the Korea Tourism Organization.

Customs associated with the holiday include charye, an ancestral memorial service, and seongmyo, visits to family graves. Celebrations may also feature folk games and performances such as jegichagi, ganggangsullae, ssireum and talchum. These are broader Chuseok traditions; the Delhi report does not say they were all part of KCCI’s gathering.

  • Hangeul calligraphy: Visitors wrote wishes using Korean script.
  • Jegichagi: Participants tried the traditional game of keeping a small object aloft with their feet.
  • Tuho: Visitors tried a traditional game of throwing arrows into a container.
  • Hanbok: Attendees had the chance to wear traditional Korean dress.
  • Songpyeon tasting: Visitors sampled the rice cake associated with Chuseok.

For 17-year-old student Anushka Pal, the calligraphy session connected with a familiar feeling: “I loved the Hangeul calligraphy session and writing down my wishes! This artistic practice of writing the Korean alphabet with soft brush pens or ink is inspired by the Korean tradition of making wishes under the full moon. It reminded me of growing up seeing people in India write down their wishes or pray during festivals. I’ve always found that idea comforting: putting a wish into words and having faith in it.” Her description of the practice and its meaning reflects her own experience at the event.

How attendees connected Korean and Indian traditions

Participants drew their own parallels between the activities and things they recognized from India. Naina, a 21-year-old city-based student, compared jegichagi to chungi, describing both as games in which players use their feet to stop an object from touching the ground. She also compared songpyeon’s appearance to gujiya and its taste to panjiri. These are her impressions, not formal equivalences between the games or foods.

“I’m a fan of K-pop music and K-food, but didn’t know how rich Korean culture is beyond that. What has stunned me are the similarities between Korean and Indian culture. I thoroughly enjoyed playing jegichagi, which is very similar to India’s chungi game, where we use our feet to keep an object from touching the ground. And the foodie in me loved trying Songpyeon — a Korean rice cake that looks like a gujiya and tastes like panjiri.”

But I like the fact that beyond Korean pop culture, there’s a traditional side as well, where people wear traditional Korean dresses. I, too, wore the comfy and elegant Hanbok to feel like I’m in a K-drama myself!”

Why songpyeon is associated with Chuseok

Songpyeon is a signature Chuseok rice cake. Korea Tourism Organization describes it as half-moon shaped, with fillings that can include sesame, beans or red beans. The KCCI gathering included a tasting, giving visitors a direct introduction to a food tied to the holiday. The comparison with gujiya and panjiri came from Naina, rather than from the tourism guidance.
