Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said more than 100 acres had been reclaimed across the Okhla, Bhalswa and Ghazipur landfill sites after 2.16 crore metric tonnes of waste were processed. The figures were reported by The Indian Express on 31 August 2026; the available reporting attributes them to the Delhi government, rather than to an independent audit.

What Delhi reported at each landfill

The government-reported figures cover legacy-waste processing and reclaimed area at the three sites. The totals below are approximate and were reported by The Indian Express on 31 August 2026.

Site Waste processed Land reclaimed Reported clearance target
Okhla About 70 lakh metric tonnes 35 acres December 2026
Bhalswa About 102 lakh metric tonnes 45 acres December 2026
Ghazipur About 44 lakh metric tonnes 20 acres December 2027

The rounded site totals add up to 216 lakh metric tonnes, or 2.16 crore metric tonnes, and 100 acres. These are reported progress figures, not a comparison of environmental safety or the quality of final site remediation.

What “reclaimed” means—and what it does not

Land reclamation in this context means recovering space occupied by accumulated waste through remediation. It does not, by itself, establish that the land is ready for any particular public use, or demonstrate the site’s long-term environmental safety. The Indian Express report said the government planned to clear the three sites by the stated targets, but also noted delays from heavy rainfall and continued fresh-waste inflows.

An earlier Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs update offers a dated Bhalswa snapshot: as of 26 May 2026, nearly 43 acres of the roughly 70-acre site had been reclaimed, and about 23.17 lakh metric tonnes of legacy and fresh waste remained to be processed. That update was published by the ministry on 28 May 2026. Its acreage and remaining-waste figures differ from the later report’s 45 reclaimed acres and 102 lakh tonnes processed; the available sources do not establish that the measurements are directly comparable.

How biomining processes old landfill waste

The process described in the 31 August report involves excavating accumulated waste, biologically treating it and separating materials that can be recovered or reused. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi began biomining in 2019 following directions from the National Green Tribunal, according to the report.

Biomining is aimed at reducing and sorting old, mixed waste; it is distinct from stopping new waste from arriving. Continued fresh-waste inflows mean that clearing legacy deposits alone cannot prevent renewed accumulation.

Where recovered material goes

Gupta said recovered inert material was being used to fill low-lying areas and prepare road bases. The ministry’s May 2026 statement separately said reclaimed landfill land should be used judiciously for public purposes and community welfare. That direction is not evidence that a specific public-use plan has been finalized for all the reclaimed acreage.

Separate Okhla construction-waste project

Delhi’s Economic Survey 2025–26 describes a proposed construction-and-demolition (C&D) waste processing facility on seven reclaimed acres at Okhla. The survey lists four operational C&D processing facilities with total stated capacity of 5,000 tonnes per day and says the proposed Okhla facility would have capacity of 1,000 tonnes per day, serve the Central and South zones, and have a likely commissioning date of December 2026. It also says processed C&D materials are used for tiles, pavement blocks, ready-mix concrete and aggregates.

This proposed facility is a separate infrastructure project, not the three-site legacy-waste biomining announcement. The Government of India eProcurement portal lists an MCD tender titled “Reclamation of land through disposal of waste by Bio-remediation and Bio-mining at Okhla Dumpsite, Delhi,” reference EE/SLF/OKHLA/MCD/2026-27/06; the retrieved status information does not establish that a contractor has been awarded the work.
