Delhi Police detained protesters and opposition figures on October 2, 2026, as demonstrators tried to gather at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. They were calling for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign over the Election Commission’s revision of voter lists, including its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Published detention estimates differ by outlet and reporting time, so no single figure should be treated as a settled total.
What happened at Jantar Mantar?
Student and civil-society groups tried to gather at Jantar Mantar, a designated protest site in New Delhi. The Associated Press reported that police prevented the gathering and detained dozens of protesters and some opposition leaders on their way to the site. The Indian Express reported more than 500 people detained from Jantar Mantar and nearby areas, including former Delhi chief minister Atishi.
In a separate Indian Express account, police put the number of detentions at more than 700 by the afternoon. These are different reporting snapshots, not a verified final count. The AP described dozens detained, while the two Indian Express reports gave higher figures.

Why were protesters calling for Gyanesh Kumar to resign?
The reported demand was for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign. Protesters and opposition groups objected to the Election Commission’s handling of voter-list revisions, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Those objections are claims made by the groups involved; the reports cited here do not independently establish that electoral rolls were improperly changed.

Did police deny permission, and were cases registered?
A follow-up report by The Indian Express on October 3 said Delhi Police had denied permission for the Jantar Mantar demonstration and registered three FIRs over the attempt to hold the protest. The reports cited here do not establish a direct Election Commission response to this specific demonstration.
Was there a separate protest in Mumbai?
Yes. The Associated Press also reported a demonstration in Mumbai by the Cockroach Janata Party, which was linked to the demand for Kumar’s resignation. That was a separate event from the detentions in New Delhi; the AP’s Mumbai report does not change the varying detention figures reported for Jantar Mantar.
